Carson City area weather: Windy and cooler with Sierra snow likely, valley snow showers possible
With the weekend behind us, cooler, unsettled weather is ahead for the next couple of days, with Monday bringing gusty winds, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Wind Advisory for the greater Reno, Carson City and Carson Valley areas.
The Wind Advisory is from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday. Forecasters say winds will be from the southwest, 25 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected. Wind prone areas along US-395 could see gusts more than 55 mph.
The weather services advises blowing dust may limit visibility in some areas and that tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
Meanwhile, snow is expected in the Sierra from Monday into Wednesday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Watch for Lake Tahoe and Sierra from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday morning.
The first wave Monday will bring 3 to 4 inches of snow to the Sierra Crest above 7,000 feet, and 1 to 2 inches may accumulate down to Lake Tahoe level. For the upper elevations and passes of Lassen County, 2 to 4 inches are possible.
Forecasters say the heavier snow from Lake Tahoe to Alpine and Mono counties will happen Tuesday night through Wednesday. Forecasters were unsure if the snow would make it down to western Nevada valleys.
As of Monday morning, the National Weather Service says the Carson City area has a 30 percent chance of snow showers on Tuesday, a 50 percent chance of snow showers Tuesday night and 50 percent chance for snow showers Wednesday. Skies will be clearing Thursday.
The weather service says light snow is possible Wednesday night into Thursday with periods of snow showers that may bring additional light accumulations mainly to Mono County and higher elevations of western Nevada south of Highway 50.
