Carson City earns arts spotlight: Taking Flight exhibit unveiled at Reno-Tahoe Airport
The Reno-Tahoe International Airport unveiled its “Carson City Arts: Taking Flight” exhibit Tuesday evening at the airport’s gallery which features local artists who shine a spotlight on the capital city.
The gallery boasts artwork from 54 Carson City artists, including Western Nevada College faculty, members of the Carson City Arts & Culture Coalition, and members of the Nevada Arts Association.
Mayor Bob Crowell was a keynote speaker of the event attended by nearly 200 people.
“This shines a spotlight on Carson City and Carson City’s arts and culture programs and our desire to be part of the arts and culture community of northern Nevada,” said Mayor Crowell. “You could say from Carson City’s standpoint we’ve been a bit isolated, and this is the first time we’re stepping out into the region and that’s a wonderful thing to do, and it’s wonderful that the airport has been so welcoming.”
Mayor Crowell also went on to say that it’s important for Carson City’s tourism, since it will be on display for thousands of tourists through its run until April 25.
“Arts and culture are what holds a city together,” said Mayor Crowell. “I am so proud of the talent displayed by our artists.”
Carson City Arts and Culture Director Mark Salinas hosted the event, and said this is an important way to not only showcase our capital’s art culture, but it increases viewership of the individual art pieces from local artists as well.
“The artists involved in the show have said what a great opportunity this is as a way of getting their art out there,” said Salinas. “This is a line item in not only these artists’ resumes, but it’s also a line item in the provenance of the artwork, which shows its exhibition history which gives added value to the pieces.”
Three artists were also given awards in the form of individual gallery spots for their works to be displayed. Michelle Legras Peltier and Rachel Stiff of Western Nevada College, and Fred Howland, president of the Nevada Arts Association, were awarded the honor.
The art work can be viewed in the Reno-Tahoe International Airport in their depARTures Gallery on the C Concourse, located past security on the second floor.
