State Health Division Awards Three Grants for Nevada Students
The Nevada State Health Division has awarded three planning grants to Nevada organizations to develop new or enhance existing comprehensive school-based health centers. Approximately 19,000 students from three Nevada counties — Lyon, Washoe and Clark — stand to benefit from the grants. Grant monies will also be used to enhance school emergency preparedness.
Grant recipients — Healthy Communities Coalition, Nevada Board of Regents and Community Health Alliance Foundation — identify main schools for the SBHCs, and arrange for several “feeder schools” to participate.
SBHCs provide medical, dental and mental health screening and treatment to students in the schools. They are designed to overcome barriers to health care access, including transportation, lack of providers and insurance coverage, inconvenient appointment times, prohibitive costs, and general apprehension about discussing personal health problems. The services provided are based on a local needs assessment and are approved by the parents and community. Each community develops programs based on identified needs and gaps in services, making each SBHC unique to its community.
“School-based health centers are leading the way in redefining health for kids and teens and I congratulate all the recipients,” said Tracey D. Green, MD Health. “They excel at ensuring students get the physical, mental, and other health care services they need. This is critically-needed funding that will benefit schools and communities as well as students and their families.”
Data show that school-based health centers help decrease absenteeism, reduce unnecessary and costly emergency room visits, and ensure quality and cost-effective care for children and adolescents. School based health centers help integrated primary and behavioral health services for children while providing a new access point. Currently there are more than 1,800 centers nationwide serving more than 1.8 million children.
