What Works: 10 Steps to Success According to Moana

Say what you want about Disney princesses, I find them to be inspiring in their own unique way. I want to share about "Moana." First, if you haven’t seen the film, Carson City Stadium Cinemas is down to one 4 p.m. showing this week.

So, you may need to get off work early for some “field study” to catch it on the big screen. I swear to you, it will be worth it. Trust me. You don’t want to wait for streaming or digital to receive the full impact of this movie.

Second, the short film at the front end of the movie makes an already great movie even better. The short has no narration, just music and a message.

The message was simple and poignant. If you overthink your life and don’t give your other organs (heart, lungs, stomach) a voice, you aren’t living a whole life.

Sometimes your brain needs to throw your heart a rope to do the things you really love and not talk yourself out of it. We all end up in the same place anyway, period. So why let fear limitation and die a slow death while you are still living? It was powerful stuff.

Then, it was on to the movie. Rather than write a review, I am going to talk about the key principles in Moana’s journey and how they can help propel you forward in life and business. I can tell you I will be recommending this movie as a teaching tool for a LONG time. This article will kick off a 10 part series to help you master the concepts in this film.

No. 1: Intuition: Sometimes you hear the call of your dreams. Maybe you long to work for yourself. Maybe you already do and you want to grow. Perhaps your calling is to do something else to help the world. Listen to that inner voice.

No. 2: Voicing Intention: Once you listen, express your intention. Moana rehearsed what she was going to say when she found the demi-god. She was clear on her intention and she put it into words to motivate herself. Affirmation works.

No. 3: Listening to the Pull of Desire: Desire will pull you. Beyond intuition, it will be persistent. It will get under your skin, drive you, and motivate you. The short film addressed this as well. Listen to the pull of desire and growth is certain.

No. 4: Addressing Obstacles: Obstacles are also certain. Moana didn’t get beyond the reef on the first shot. She put her desire to the side for a short while, but that pull of desire was still there. Once she was shown a bigger boat, a different way, she had the tools she needed to get past the reef. Note: Sometimes, the reef rests in our thoughts and is not a physical barrier.

No. 5: Taking Action: Action, action, and more action — when you have passion, intention, strategy, and perseverance, you need to back that up with consistent action. This means you have to put down the planner and start doing! Before you know it, you are on the ocean.

No. 6: Accepting Help: You can slog through and try to figure it out. Or, you can team up with someone. Asking for help, from a professional, a colleague, a networking group, or even someone in a LinkedIn professional group, will help you break through challenges faster. Moana could have figured out some things about sailing on her own and she did. But once Maui taught her, she became proficient.

No. 7: Not Backing Down: When obstacles are crushing, it’s tempting to quit. It’s tempting just to say it’s too hard and your dreams aren’t meant to be yours. However, when you have a support team (accepting help) and you have a clear plan of action, that last little push may be the one that wins the battle.

No. 8: Making Success Real: You have come this far. You need to celebrate your milestones. When you conquer one beast, congratulate yourself for overcoming what you have. It’s no small accomplishment to get over one hump, just because you see another on the horizon. Be your own best cheerleader.

No. 9: Adaptability in the Situation: You have to be willing to adapt and look at situations differently. That mean, you need to get over what you think is the only way to do something and be willing to change in the moment. As a leader, that means you need to be persuadable. You need to be open to changing your opinions about people as well.

No. 10: Pride AND Humility: You can take joy in your accomplishment without letting it be your reason for getting up in the morning. We all play a part in this world. There are some chiefs. There are some villagers. There are some who shake things up. There are others who keep things running quietly. We all play a part. What’s yours?
