Fritsch Elementary student takes 2nd place in statewide archery tournament
A fourth grade Fritsch Elementary School student took second place overall in the statewide girls division and 8th place overall in the elementary division of the National Archery In The Schools competition held recently in Las Vegas.
Braelynn Hudson said she didn’t know what archery was until she was introduced to the sport in her P.E. class taught by Carson City teacher Laura Valley. She added that she now has a bow of her own and practices at home.
“I’m excited that her parents bought her a bow, so she has been wasting arrows at home,” said Valley. “We’re really proud of her and these kids.”
John Valley, Laura’s husband and retired chemistry teacher at Carson High School, volunteers to help the kids practice during the P.E. classes archery segment.
“Archery can lead to great opportunities for students such as college scholarships,” he said. Twelve U.S. colleges have varsity archery teams as of 2017 and there is a U.S. Olympic Training Center for archery located in Chula Vista, Calif.
Mrs. Valley said there are quite a few schools in Las Vegas, Fallon, Fernley and across the state that participate in the yearly tournament.
“If a student gets top 10 in their age group they qualify to go to regional competition in Salt Lake City,” Valley said.
The tournament is managed by the Nevada Department of Wildlife and is held alongside the World Archery Festival in Las Vegas.
