Celtic series at Carson City's BAC continues this weekend with The Valerie Rose Band

Event Date:
February 10, 2018 - 7:00pm

Carson City's very own Celtic music series continues Saturday when The Valerie Rose Band takes center stage at the Brewery Arts Center in the Maizie Harris Jesse Black Box Theater.

The Valerie Rose Band brings the dynamic music and song of Ireland, Scotland and other Celtic lands to life. Fiddle virtuoso, Valerie Rose, and her long-time Bay Area collaborator Jason Pollack perform the irresistible Celtic dance tunes and the alternately beautiful and bawdy songs of the Celtic tradition. It’s high-energy, fun, powerful, acoustic music that's good for the heart and soul. The Feb. 10 show begins at 7 p.m.

Hearkening back to the pioneers of the Celtic folk music revival such as Clannad and Altan, Valerie’s arrangements of traditional Irish tunes and songs are spiced with rich harmonies and playful interchanges between voice and instruments. Audiences find captivating the pure, haunting quality of her voice and the vibrant intensity of her fiddling. With each piece, she brings to life the transcendent beauty of Celtic melodies and the joyous energy of the Irish tradition’s jigs, reels and hornpipes.

Joining the Valerie Rose Band is acclaimed singer/songwriter/guitarist, Kyle Alden. He has appeared on stages throughout California, Colorado, the Pacific Northwest and Ireland. His third CD, Songs From Yeats’ Bee-Loud Glade— a collection of 13 original folk songs inspired by poems of W. B. Yeats — received world-wide radio airplay and was on three “Best of 2011” lists among folk music DJs.

As the 2012 grand prize winner of the Y-Tunes Song Contest for his settings of W.B. Yeats’ poetry, Kyle was honored to perform at the Hawks Well Theater in Sligo, Ireland in the summer of 2013. As part of the annual Celtic-Appalachian Celebration in March 2015 he joined Mick Moloney and Athena Tergis in performing a selection of the Yeats songs at Symphony Space on Broadway in New York.

Jason Pollack is one of the most dynamic Irish flute players in the San Francisco Bay Area. His full sound and crisp musicianship help bring the tunes of Irish Traditional Music alive. He always seeks to express the unique character and energy of each tune, from lively and bright to somber and dark and many shades in between. Though initially classically trained, Jason found Irish music later in life and is now completely devoted to it. He believes that, since the tunes are dance music, if people are moving to the music, then he’s done his job, he’s doing it right.

Valerie Rose Band has played some of the largest festivals in Northern California including the KVMR Celtic Festival, Dublin (Calif.) Irish Festival, Festival of the Sea (San Francisco), Palo Alto Art and Wine Festival, and many others.

“Valerie is a phenomenal vocal talent…her voice is lucid and moving, her fiddling sultry and strong.” says San Francisco area Celtic harp legend Chris Caswell.
