Clearly not doves, these two hawks were seen roosting on the steeple of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Carson City.

Every winter, Carson Valley becomes a nesting ground for bald eagles, golden eagles, falcons, hawks, owls and other wildlife as they congregate to the region. Carson Valley’s expansive open space and cattle ranches provide habitat for the wintering birds of prey.

Happy Saturday Carson City! We have a bunch of great events going on in the region throughout the weekend, so check below to see what’s happening!

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Nevada Artists Association New Year’s Show, and there’s a historical Curry family presentation at the Nevada State Museum. Famed country rock band I See Hawks in L.A. perform at the Historic Silver City Schoolhouse on Saturday. Combined with live music at Bella Vita Bistro, there’s plenty to do and see around the state capitol. Read on for more.

The Carson Senators varsity football team plays the Hug Hawks on Friday at Carson High School at 7 p.m.

Carson is 1-2 to start the year coming off a tough losses to Foothill and Redding. Hug is 0-4 coming off a 39-0 loss to Galena.

The Sierra Lutheran Falcons are off to a solid start on the season, with a pair of wins from the girls varsity and junior varsity volleyball squads and a first place finish from the girls golf team.

Sierra Lutheran’s JV volleyball team won its first non-conference matchup against Mineral County on Friday. The Hawks won both sets 25-18 and 25-20.

According to a Dayton State Parks spokesperson, a Tarantula Hawk, an insect with the second most painful sting on earth, was spotted near Rock Point Mill.

The weekend is at our doorstep as we head into Friday, May 10, 2019. Even though forecasters say we may have showers this weekend, the cool spring rain won't dampen the fun. We have a bevy of activities lined up Friday including the opening of the Transcontinental Railroad exhibit at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, day 1 of the two-day Mother's Day Plant Sale hosted by The Greenhouse Project, RSVP's Spring Celebration and Carnival at Mills Park, a day hike, art showings, live music and more.

Meet at Brunswick Canyon Road and Deer Run road, 1 mile south of Highway 50 East, Carson City. Join Muscle Powered as we walk along the very actively-flowing river. Kingfishers, hawks, and waterfowl are often seen along this stretch of the river. Hike distance will range between 2-4 miles, depending on trail condition. Water and closed-toes shoes are REQUIRED. Hat and sunscreen recommended.

A greater variety of birds of prey can be seen this time of year in the Carson City area, including the Cooper's Hawk, a diminutive cousin to the larger Red Tail Hawk.

Here is what's happening around Carson City on Saturday, Jan. 12:

This easy hike occurs on the second Saturday of each month. Distances range between 2-4 miles and include minimal or no elevation.

Meet at the red barn at Silver Saddle Ranch off of Carson River Road. On Carson River Road turn by the Silver Saddle Ranch and proceed through the gate. Follow the dirt road straight and it will bare to the left heading east and then you will see the red buildings ahead where you park. Water and closed-toes shoes are REQUIRED. Hat and sunscreen recommended. Dogs are not allowed on this hike.

Upon exiting the final dress rehearsal for the Pinkerton Ballet Nutcracker Friday afternoon, we were fortunate to see a hawk with its prey on the stairs in front of the Carson City Community Center.

Birds, bears, bobcats, deer, tree squirrels, voles, moles and more are migrating from summer to winter habitat. With the arrival of autumn, animals must devour quantities of calories to prepare for winter food scarcity. Abundant fruit is falling off trees, waiting for hungry critters to come and get it.

In Northern Nevada, we're generally used to animals that are anything but cuddly. Rattlesnakes, hawks with razor-sharp talons; even our wild horses bite and kick. But a new addition to the environment has some Nevadans wary.

After a three game roundabout in California and going 1-2 in the process, the Carson High School Senators returned home to Ron McNutt Field Tuesday in Carson City looking to rebound against the Hug Hawks of Reno.

Urban landscape design can be repetitious to extravagant, lush to ridiculously sterile. Landscape design is a contrived artistic system of imposed order. It can complement and encourage the ecology of an area or fight against it. Often designs are not integrated with the natural environment.

The annual Eagles and Agriculture event kicks off this week in the Carson Valley, a wildlife viewing exhibition that attracts hundreds of visitors to the area to see birds of prey feeding and nesting below the eastern slopes of the Carson Range.

But Carson City residents don't have to leave the Eagle Valley to catch glimpses of raptors. We've got them in our own backyards.
