Hundreds raised for Carson High's NJROTC Rifle Team
A fundraiser held last week at Chili's Restaurant in South Carson City collected $380 for the Carson High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) Rifle Team in its quest to make the trip to a national championship finals competition next month, said team mom Sierra Asby.
The team qualified for the annual U.S. Secretary of the Navy Marksmanship (Air Rifle) Competition, held Feb. 16-18 in Anniston, Alabama.
Other Navy JROTC programs from around the country compete in this national championship shooting competition, CHS coach and NJROTC instructor Dan Meyer said.
Cadets in the CHS program competed this past November, shooting against all other Navy JROTC units across the nation, Meyer said, placing 11th out of 620 other Navy JROTC air rifle teams.
Carson High also just placed second in team competition at the Northern Nevada Air Rifle State Championships held at the CHS NJROTC facility this past weekend.
In addition to the money raised through Chili's last week, Asby said other monetary donations from the community have totaled $420.
The combined total of $800 will help cadets foot the costs of traveling to Alabama for the Navy competition.
Team members are responsible for all related expenses, CHS NJROTC said.
"A trip of this nature is fairly costly," said Cadet Ensign Mikaela Asby, team captain and third-year veteran rifle competitor. "Airfare and lodging alone is substantial."
Separate donations can still be made to the Navy Junior ROTC Program Air Rifle Team through the main office at Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman Road in Carson City. The NJROTC office may be contacted through the school's front office at 775-283-1910.
