Carson City area weather: Windy with chance of rain, some Sierra snow Tuesday
A weak winter storm will pass through the region Tuesday, bringing gusty winds and a chance of rain to the Carson City region and some snow across Sierra passes, according to the National Weather Service.
There's a potential for travel impacts across northern Sierra passes on Tuesday with a few inches of snowfall expected. Snow levels Tuesday will generally remain between 5,500 to 6,000 feet with snowfall accumulations of 2-5 inches possible on northern Sierra passes including Donner Summit, Echo Summit and Carson Pass with around 1 to 2 inches possible for Fredonyer, Brockway, Mt Rose, and ridges across Mono County.
Accumulations near Lake Tahoe level and Mammoth Lakes look generally less than an inch.
Initial snow onset Tuesday across western Lassen County will be around 4 to 6 a.m., then across the Tahoe Basin around 8 to 10 a.m. with the best potential mid-Tuesday afternoon into the early evening, according to the weather service.
Across western Nevada, this system will largely be shadowed out with the exception of far northern Washoe County near the Oregon border where up to a tenth of an inch of rainfall is possible.
This will be more of a wind maker for the lower valleys with wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph across the Tahoe Basin and along the US-395 and I-580 corridor from Walker northward. Winds may result in hazardous boating conditions across area lakes and possible travel restrictions for high profile vehicles where cross winds are present.
As of Monday, the weather service says there's around a 50 percent chance of rain for the Carson City, Carson Valley areas, and a 30 percent chance Tuesday evening. Sunny skies ahead Wednesday and Thursday with highs in the low 50s.
