CHS NJROTC Rifle Team seeks community support for nationals
A fundraiser to help the Carson High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) Rifle Team attend a national invitational next month will be held next Thursday, Jan. 26 at Chili's restaurant off Topsy Lane in South Carson City.
The team has qualified for this year's U.S. Secretary of the Navy Marksmanship (Air Rifle) Competition, held Feb. 16-18 in Anniston, Alabama.
Carson High's NJROTC cadets competed earlier this past November, shooting against all other Navy JROTC units across the nation, team coach Lt. Commander Daniel Meyer said.
CHS placed 11th out of 620 other Navy JROTC air rifle teams, he said. Only four points separated ninth and 11th places.
"This shows you how close these matches can be," Meyer said. "This is a great opportunity for our team."
Carson High's high placement at the November competition earned it a spot at the Secretary's national invitational, where the top 10 teams of cadet marksmen in each area will square off against one another.
But qualifying for invitational was only the first step for CHS NJROTC cadets. The next hurdle to clear is funding since team members are responsible for all related expenses, CHS NJROTC said.
"A trip of this nature is fairly costly," said Cadet Ensign Mikaela Asby, team captain and third-year veteran rifle competitor. "Airfare and lodging alone is substantial."
Cadets are seeking help from the community to support their trip to Alabama next month and are looking to raise funds to help cover the costs.
Chili's in South Carson City has stepped up to help the CHS NJROTC Rifle Team achieve its fundraising goals with next Thursday's event, held from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. CHS NJROTC will receive a percentage of sales during the fundraiser when customers either show up with a copy of the event flier or mention it to the servers.
"Through the generosity of Chili's Restaurant in Carson City, local residents can receive a great meal all the while helping cadets reach their goal," the team said in a statement.
Copies of fundraiser fliers can be obtained at either of the two Les Schwab Tires locations in Carson City: on the north side of town at 3219 N. Carson Street, and also on the south end at 3020 S. Carson Street.
Separate donations can be made to the Navy Junior ROTC Program Air Rifle Team through the main office at Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman Road in Carson City. The NJROTC office may be contacted through the school's front office at 775-283-1910.
