Jonah Toral, Nathan Parsons, and Bita Jazani were awarded the fifth annual Rosemary Nebesky Memorial Scholarships by the Carson City Symphony Association this month. The scholarship was established by John and Jennifer Webley of Santa Rosa, Calif., in memory Rosemary Nebesky, who loved music, loved children, and had been a friend and board member of the Carson City Symphony Association.

Clouds will roll into the capital city region Tuesday keeping temperatures quite chilly. The Orchestra Program of Carson City School District is holding its Holiday Concert Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. When the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra held its very first concert fifty years ago, it played the music of the iconic American composer George Gershwin.

As part of its Reno Philharmonic Exhibition Lecture Series, the Nevada Historical Society will welcome guest lecturers Dr. Mark Clague and Timothy Freeze, both musicologists, who take on the topic, “Gershwin’s Legacy.”

Music, artisans and food come together at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 28 from 4 to to 8 p.m. in a “Musical Jamboree."

Each fall the Reno Phil offers families the opportunity to experience a symphonic music concert developed with youngsters in mind; full of musical education and activities to keep the attention of the young audience. This year’s concert, “el día de los muertos,” takes place Saturday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. at the Pioneer Center for Performing Arts. The concert is free however tickets must be reserved online in advance. All ages are welcome.

Lake Tahoe SummerFest’s fourth season, “Passport to a World of Music,” will bring Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn to audiences July 31 – Aug. 16. The three weekend series of nine different concerts will transport attendees through masterpieces translated by renowned artists and a nationally acclaimed orchestra of 40 players.

Brian Sandoval and the Nevada 150 Commission for #NevadaSings, a state-wide simultaneous sing along of “Home Means Nevada.” On Thursday, Oct. 30 at 10 a.m., Nevadans will join together to demonstrate their state pride by singing a rendition of “Home Means Nevada” in an attempt to set the record for the most people in an American state to sing their state song at the same time.

The pure love of music is inspiring and motivating and, for many, life changing. This is especially true for youth involved with orchestral programs. The Reno Philharmonic Association’s Free Family Concert and Youth Orchestra Fall Showcase puts the organization’s music education program center stage Nov. 15 at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, Reno, Nev. The concerts are part of the Reno Philharmonics’ education and outreach initiatives, providing music education, enrichment and exposure to thousands of Washoe County and greater Truckee Meadows school children.

This milestone performance marks the first full orchestral and choral arrangement of the state’s song, "Home Means Nevada."

Many celebrations are scheduled statewide in the month of August. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Aug. 1 through Aug. 14.

Western Nevada College Carson City is offering youth piano classes in its high-tech, digital piano laboratory this spring semester. Youth can now enroll for classes in the same Clavinova lab that is a favorite with college students.

Professional pianist Sue Kinney teaches the classes on Friday afternoons. Beginning classes for Kindergarteners and first graders are offered from 4:30-5:20, p.m., second and third graders meet from 5:30-6:20 p.m., and fourth to sixth graders meet from 3:30-4:20 p.m.

An action-packed week filled with music, arts, books, Nevada political history and more will be featured as Carson City Library celebrates National Library week.

Special events kick off Monday, 6 p.m., at the library auditorium with “The Lure of Music, a Human Universal” presented by internationally-recognized music scholar Fredric Lieberman, Ph.D., a distinguished professor of music at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
