Carson City Commute for Jan. 11: Wet and breezy, some controls at higher elevations
Motorists can expect a breezy and wet commute Wednesday morning into and out of Carson City, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno reports.
A winter weather advisory is in effect until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, the NWS said, and a flood advisory continues for the area until 10 a.m.
The Carson City Emergency Operations Center was reactivated overnight because of flash flooding that resulted in water spilling onto roadways in places around the county. A flash flood warning remained in effect until 5:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to the NWS.
Parts of South Curry Street in Carson City were closed overnight due to the flash flooding event. The road was closed from Tenth Street to the Shell fuel station, and also south to Rhodes Street, where water continues to be diverted a short distance down Curry into the maintenance driveway of the Nevada State Railroad Museum.
Rain and/or snow is likely Wednesday with a 70 percent chance of precipitation in the Carson City area. Total accumulation of less than an inch is forecast.
A dusting of snow has fallen overnight in East Carson City, including some visible on residential streets.
Expect road to be slick in some locations around the area.
Wednesday's high temperature for Carson City is forecast to reach around 40 degrees. The chance of precipitation reduces to 40 percent Wednesday night.
Interstate 580 in Southern Washoe County through Washoe Valley and old U.S. Highway 395 Alternate from Pagni Lane to the Bowers Mansion interchange currently have chains or snow tires required, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT).
Controls on old U.S. Highway 395 remain in effect until noon Wednesday, said NDOT.
Chains or snow tires are also required on U.S. Highway 395 South from northern Mono County, CA, to the Douglas County line, as well as from mileposts 4.1 to 13.8 in Douglas County, NDOT reported.
U.S. Highway 50 along Lake Tahoe also features chain or snow tire requirements, particularly from milepost 14.6 in Douglas County across the Carson City line to milepost 7.6 toward the Nevada state capital.
Chains or snow tires are required along State Route 28, too, from Douglas to Washoe County between U.S. Highway 50 and Incline Village.
SR 341 has traction tire or devices requirements from the Lyon County line to milepost 9 in Storey County, NDOT reports, while SR 431 up the Mount Rose Highway has chain or traction tire controls up to Apollo Way/Fairview Drive, where the roadway is currently closed to Douglas Fir Drive due to a winter storm.
SR 431 is expected to remain closed until about noon Wednesday, said NDOT.
