How Two Kids with One Big Idea are Helping Carson City: Flag Retirement Ceremony this Friday
On August 28, 2016, Edith W. Fritsch Elementary School 8-year-old 3rd grader Chloe Woodbury announced her state service project for the Children of the American Revolution, U.S. Flag retirement bins, at a dedication ceremony of the first bin placed at the Carson City Library and attended by Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and other elected officials and featured in local news media and on Reno television.
Chloe was then serving as State President of the Nevada State Society Children of the American Revolution, and each State President must have a state community service project.
Three U.S. flag retirement bins were placed that week at the Carson City Library, the Carson Flag Store and Grandma Hattie’s Restaurant (now relocated to Carson City Hall).
Chloe's twin brother Peter Woodbury, current State President of Nevada C.A.R and now a 9-year-old 4th grader at Fritsch, has continued the project this year. A total of six bins have been placed in Nevada communities, with additional flag retirement bins in North Las Vegas, Boulder City and in Gardnerville at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center.
Since August 2016, more than 2,000 flags in need of retirement have been collected from the Carson City community through the three U.S. flag retirement bins.
Peter and Chloe Woodbury and older brother PFC Noah Jennings, Nevada Army National Guard and Carson High School graduate, have worked with the local Daughters of the American Revolution Battle Born Chapter and the City of Carson City to organize a community flag retirement ceremony to properly retire these 2,000 flags this Friday, November 10, at 3 p.m. at Fuji Park in south Carson City.
The ceremony will be led by Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, with local elected officials, veterans groups, the Carson High School NJROTC and others, and of course Chloe and Peter Woodbury, participating.
The ceremony is open to the public and all are invited to attend.
