Exhibition Opens at Nevada Humanities Program Gallery in Las Vegas on December 5
As part of the Nevada Humanities Exhibition Series, a new exhibition, Snapshot: Culling Our History from the Family Album, opens on December 5, 2019, at the Nevada Humanities Program Gallery in Las Vegas. The exhibition is presented in partnership with the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) University Libraries Special Collections and Archives. Snapshot is co-curated by Peter Michel, Interim Director of Special Collections and Archives, and Aaron Mayes, Curator for Visual Materials. The exhibition will be on display December 5, 2019, through January 23, 2020.
Family albums are often treasured heirlooms preserving memories passed from generation to generation. But for Las Vegas historians, the albums that have made their way to Special Collections and Archives in the UNLV University Libraries hold much more than the faces of past residents. They provide a window into the past and a glimpse of family and social life in historic Las Vegas. These photographs have become the basis for how we visualize our city’s history.
“It is an amazing revelation to understand the history of a city through the family albums that each of us hold dear. In this way, deeply personal history becomes public history. Our intimate stories become part of a larger shared narrative that defines us all,” said Nevada Humanities Executive Director Christina Barr. “I will never look the same way at my family albums again, and neither will visitors after they see this exhibition.“
Snapshot will be on display from December 5, 2019 – January 23, 2020, at the Nevada Humanities Program Gallery, which is located in the Art Square Garden Courtyard at 1017 South First Street, #190, Las Vegas. The Nevada Humanities Program Gallery is open Monday through Friday, from 1:00 - 5:00 pm and until 9:00 pm on Preview Thursdays, and the first Friday of each month.
Nevada Humanities will host an opening reception for Snapshot on Thursday, December 5, 2019, from 6:00 - 9:00 pm, with a curator’s talk at 7:00 pm, at the Nevada Humanities Program Gallery in Las Vegas. The opening reception is free and open to the public.
