Carson City Library staff to participate in Sesquicentennial celebration
The Carson City Library will close on Friday, Oct. 31 and Saturday, Nov. 1 in recognition of Nevada Day, the State's annual statehood celebration.
Friday, Oct. 31 is the official Nevada Day state holiday wherein most state and local public agencies are closed. Annually the capital city hosts a number of traditional events on the Saturday following the last Friday in October — to include a parade down Carson Street starting at 10 a.m. 2014 marks the Silver State’s sesquicentennial —150 years of statehood.
This year, library trustees, members of the Friends of the Carson City Library and library staff are joining the parade and have created a float from an old pontoon boat skirted in silver and blue fringe with banners that trumpet: the Carson City Library is your connection to Nevada's past, present and future and Carson City Library, still afloat since 1966.
“The story of the Silver State is among the Carson City Library’s most significant special collections contained in our Nevada collection. In fact this summer C-Span visited Carson City to produce two episodes for their award winning programs: American History TV, and Book TV. As part of the Book TV episode, our adult services librarian, Susan Antipa, showed off the collection of books about the history of Carson City and the state of Nevada. Among other things, there were stories featured that were drawn from information gathered from the Nevada collection about American author and humorist Samuel Clemens and his time spent in Carson City where he donned the name Mark Twain,” said Library Director Sena Loyd.
The library will reopen on Monday, Nov. , at 10 a.m.
“The library team is excited to participate in this year’s parade and equally happy to bring renewed attention to the C-Span programs focused on Nevada, especially since the sesquicentennial, NV 150, is focusing tremendous attention on our shared Nevada story. Governor Sandoval is a true history buff and it’s wonderful to be a part of it all,” said Loyd.
"Your Knowledge and Discovery Place", the Carson City Library is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and is located at the corner of Roop and Washington Streets.
