NAMI gala features Nellie Bly, honors local leaders
NAMI Western Nevada is proud to invite the Carson/Douglas region to enjoy a gala evening on Oct. 4 that honors local leaders in addressing mental illness.
The entertainment will be a dramatic presentation portraying Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman, better known as Nellie Bly, as she went undercover into the Women's Lunatic Asylum to uncover and report on conditions.
Mary Bennett, renowned actress and producing artistic director of the Bruka Theatre, has created this original piece expressly for NAMI Western Nevada.
The Board of Directors will also recognize the following award winners for their impact in our area:
— Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, Leadership Award
Sheriff Furlong pioneered providing Crisis Intervention Training to Carson City Sheriff's deputies several years ago, and creating a Mobile Outreach Safety Team (MOST), partnering law enforcement with behavioral health personnel in a way that reduces trauma for the mentally ill. He has since allowed his team to train rural sheriff's teams as far away as Winnemucca.
— Warden Isidro Baca, Change Maker Award
Warden Baca and his team partnered with NAMI Western Nevada to create one of the first prison-based Peer-to-Peer trainings and Connections (Peer) support groups in the nation. His support of this innovation is helping to create a bridge to recovery and stability for peers as they exit the prison system. Warden Baca also pioneered having prison staff receive and implement Crisis Intervention Training.
— Sandie Draper, Volunteer of the Year
Ms. Draper shares her life experience as a family member and her expertise in interactions with the criminal justice system as NAMI Western Nevada's lead CIT trainer, presenting to community and sheriff's department's trainings throughout the region. Sandie also serves on the NAMI Western Nevada Board of Directors.
Raffle prizes and a silent auction will round out the evening at Minden's charming CVIC Hall, 1604 Esmeralda Avenue, beginning at 5 p.m. For tickets please visit www.namiwesternnevada.org.
