Signups underway for Carson City area 4-H Science of Gardening summer club
CARSON CITY — Signups are underway for the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's new 4-H club for children ages 9-12. Kids who enroll will be able to be involved in the science of gardening and will learn what it takes to grow their own tomatoes and more.
The 4-H club members will explore what makes a garden successful: kinds of gardens, garden critters, soil – the good, the bad and the ugly, water — how much and when, weather — sometimes you gotta go with the flow, growing seasons, mulching and the stuff that makes it all come together, good wormy compost.
Also children will learn how fruits and vegetables go from seed to table, grow your own flowers and veggies, and how to build raised beds.
More exploring science adventures will be to see if it is possible to create a longer growing season. Can we fool Mother Nature?
We’ll even get into those native pollinators and birds and the parts they play in the garden. We might even do a little cooking.
Organizers urge parents not to delay and to sign up now and get on board with 4-H this summer. The first meeting is scheduled for July 31, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, Carson City, Storey County office, 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 12. Call 775 887-2252 for more information.
