RSVP Program Director to speak at Democratic Luncheon
The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Sandy Severance, program director at Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). A 501(c)(3) non-profit, RSVP has a 43-year record of service to the elderly and other citizens in need of assistance in all 15 of Nevada's rural counties. Volunteers 55 and older are provided meaningful opportunities to draw on their lifetime of experience to serve their communities in a variety of settings.
RSVP's Independent Living Programs help keep low income seniors independent and in their own homes as long as possible. Last year over 1,200 RSVP volunteers provided more than 92,000 hours of volunteer service to over 100 public and non-profit community agencies. Those programs include respite care for caregivers, home companions that provide in-home basic needs services, transportation to medical appointments and to pick up prescriptions or groceries, the Lifeline emergency telephone response system, light housekeeping services, pro bono legal services, farmer’s market coupons for low-income seniors, referrals for veterans to benefits and services to which they are entitled, and resistance exercise training that helps keep seniors active.
Other RSVP volunteer activities include crime prevention, adult literacy tutoring, Medicare and Medicaid counseling, environmental surveys and education, nutrition programs, hospital volunteer services, museum docent services, library services for the community and the homebound, computer assistance for the elderly and needy, veterans memorial services, USDA commodities food distribution, and many more. All of RSVP’s independent living programs are free with the exception of the monitoring fee from Lifeline.
This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, July 1st, in the banquet room of Carson City's Round Table, on Retail Drive just off College Parkway. Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, these luncheons help keep the lights on at Carson City's Democratic HQ. Admission is free, though suggested donations of $5 or more are gratefully accepted.
