UNR economist to speak at Monday's Democratic luncheon
The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Elliott Parker, PhD, Professor of Economics at the University of Nevada-Reno. His PowerPoint presentation will bring the current economic headlines — from ongoing labor shortages to supply chain disruptions to stubbornly high inflation rates and Fed monetary policy responses — into the context of longer-term macroeconomic trends.
Elliott Parker grew up an Air Force brat who earned a bachelor's degree in Business Systems Analysis from the University of Texas–Arlington in 1983. After adding a master's and PhD from the University of Washington, he came to Nevada to become a professor of economics at the University of Nevada–Reno. He has published several dozen articles in academic journals and is still working on increasing that number. He's also authored dozens of op-eds in a variety of Nevada newspapers and periodicals.
Prof. Parker is currently Chair of the UNR Economics Department, and has also served as Associate Dean, University Director of the Core Curriculum, Chair of the Faculty Senate, and co-editor of the China Economic Review. He teaches international and comparative economics, and wrote a textbook a few years ago on the comparative economics of growth and inequality. Before that, he co-authored a book on Nevada’s Great Recession with his wife, Kate Marshall, Nevada’s former State Treasurer and Lieutenant Governor. He was scheduled to spend much of 2021 on sabbatical in Eastern Europe, but COVID-19 torpedoed those plans. At least his dog — a three-year old Berger Picard named Penny — was happy about it.
This is Prof. Parker's fourth luncheon appearance since February 2019, which always represents a significant commitment of time, effort and expense on his part. That's why we need to show our appreciation by having good in-person attendance. We had a decent turnout for congressional candidate Tim Hanifan's presentation last Monday, but most of it was on Zoom. That's an invaluable option for those who are housebound for one reason or another, but there's still no substitute for having a group right there, breaking bread and interacting live and in person. So if you're able to make it down to Black Bear on Monday, by all means do.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, May 16th, and can be attended either in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom. Prof. Parker will take the floor after all lunch orders have been taken, around 1:30. Those wishing to be on distribution for luncheon Zoom links should email Rich Dunn, Men's Committee Events Coordinator, at richdunn@aol.com.
