She became chair of Douglas Democrats in March 2013 and served four terms in that position. She was the first Democratic candidate to formally announce a bid for the lieutenant governorship, and if successful will be the first transgender candidate elected to statewide office in the whole of the United States.

Perkins, incumbent Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) regent for District 1 (North Las Vegas). She was sworn in on January 16, 2019 after winning 62% of the vote in a four-way race in the November, 2018 general election.
