Moyle strikes out 13 in Senators' 7-1 win over Central Catholic
After a 10-5 victory against rival Douglas early Friday, Carson High baseball focused its attention on the Central Catholic Raiders, a Modesto, CA, team visiting for the Mike Bearman tournament.
A combination of stellar pitching and defense highlighted the early innings of the intense match-up. As starting pitchers Bryce Moyle of Carson High and Central Catholic's Orlando Leon were in quite the pitching duel, matching each other through the first couple of innings.
The Senators broke free with the lead, as catcher Trevor Edis belted an RBI double during the bottom of the second inning. Two wild pitches by Leon advanced Edis home, giving Carson a comfortable 2-0 lead entering the third inning.
Moyle continued his dominance on the mound, as he struck out back-to-back batters to end the third inning, striking out a total of eight in just four innings.
Third baseman Abel Carter started another rally for Carson High, advancing all the way from first to third off a wild pitch.
The Senators took advantage of the Raider's mistake in a hurry when Moyle blasted an RBI double to give them a 3-0 lead. Shortstop Jace Keema hit Moyle home with an RBI single as well, putting CHS up 4-0.
Moyle had the Raider bats baffled as he struck out the side during the fifth inning for his 11th strikeout of the game.
Clever base-running by leftfielder Luke Myers tacked on another run in the Senators' favor. Moyle added another RBI to his already impressive stat sheet as the fifth inning concluded with CHS leading 7-0.
A pair of strikeouts during the sixth inning gave Moyle a lump sum of 13. Cole McDavid came in relief for the Senators to finish the second win of the day, 7-1.
Bryce Moyle went six of the seven innings shutting out the Raiders with 13 strikeouts, while allowing only two hits and two walks. He also went 2-for-3 from the plate with a single, double, and two RBIs.
Keema finished 1-for-3 with an RBI single, and Edis also batted 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
Carter, Jared Barnard, and Kahle Goode all had singles in the game.
After the game, Moyle reflected on his memorable night.
"It feels really good, especially for the first outing of the year," he said. "It was also a great win for the team, too, because the (Central Catholic Raiders) are a really good team from the Bay Area. We had good approaches against a great pitcher tonight so we need to keep building off it."
Moyle also made sure to keep his mind focused during the tournament.
The Senators will face off against Damonte Ranch at Damonte Ranch in South Reno at 12 p.m., and against Enterprise at Wooster High in Reno at 4 p.m. in another double header Saturday, March 11 to conclude the Mike Bearman tournament.
