Michele Crain is ELA and Theatre teacher at Dayton Intermediate School in Dayton. The theatre class just recently competed in the Northern Nevada Thespian Festival sponsored by the EDTA (Educational Theatre Association). This is our second year at this educational competition of the performing arts.
Our first year we were able to have approx 9 students qualify for the state level. This was huge because no other middle school had ever done this festival let alone even have a sufficient theatre department. It was a big deal in our community, and we all pulled together to raise enough money to pay for the students to go in less than one month. We raised 7500 dollars!
Well, this year has even been more pivotal for our quaint little rural town in Dayton! This year ALL, I REPEAT ALL, 21 OF MY STUDENTS QUALIFY FOR STATE COMPETITION!!! This a huge success especially since this is predominately a high school comp. We scored 7 Superiors and 14 Excellents! Not only did all my competing students make it, but the director of the "Opening Number" for state in Vegas loved our DIS kids! He professionally addressed them and thanked them for being so amazing and brave. He personally offered to write a piece revolving around them and incorporate it for opening number. He wants to use all of the kids that auditioned for opening number.
This is unprecedented for our community. Not many school programs have that many students audition and ALL of them qualify! Needless to say, we have to raise the money to take our kiddos. Too many families are struggling financially and cannot afford this educational opportunity to shine. Unfortunately, our program is not "sanctioned" so there is no room in the budge to pay for our bus fee. We will be doing three fundraisers to earn the money.
1. A movie night at the middle school.
2. Spaghetti feed with show case performance from our competing students.
3. Old fashioned Candy company candy fundraiser
We are trying to raise $7,000 before March 9. This is such a great recognition for our community! People at the festival were talking about how we were that one school where everyone qualified.
For many of my students this will be there last experience in theatre for them. Our high school does not participate in this opportunity at all. Going to state will give these students the chance to win educational scholarships for their higher learning.
