Fitness on the Wire: Water Fun with Wet Sweat
Are you a little tired of the same fitness routine? Are you hot and sweaty? Try a change of pace from your regular workout style and move your fitness into the swimming pool. Water is a wonderful medium for those of you who enjoy summer exercise.
Carson City’s Aquatic Facility holds Wet Sweat Water Aerobics classes on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:00pm, with Monday and Thursday evenings held in the shallow end of the pool with less water resistance and less water weight to lift.
On Tuesday evenings Wet Sweat is held in the deep water end of the pool with full flotation. All needed equipment for the classes is provided by the Wet Sweat program. Summer exercise in a pool can be a wonderful change of pace for all ages and Wet Sweat is not only a welcome change but it is also a cool, healthy, fun, and challenging way to stay fit this summer..
Exercising in a water medium places resistance against all parts of your body so it adds to the weight you lift with any movement and the deeper you stand in the water the more water weight you lift and the slower your movements. Wet Sweat water aerobics includes walking, running in place, jumping and lunges to keep heart rates up and to build endurance.
In place of floor work, poolside and full water abdominal strengthening as well as leg and arm work is included as you move through the water. Hand held water barbells are provided for arm, chest and upper body strength moves, and are often combined with running and walking sequences. When you have been in the Wet Sweat classes for awhile, and you have learned the needed moves, you can take your water workout knowledge into any body of water. Motels and lakes are a good place to apply your new exercise ability.
Wet Sweat exercise not only conditions muscles, it eases impact. Impact is a problem for those who are arthritic, pregnant, overweight, or have an injury or disability that worsens with impact moves. Water supports the body between 80 to 90 percent while you exercise depending on how deep you submerge. Those of you who are not at ease in the water are probably not good swimmers, or maybe you are afraid to get your face wet. Neither one of these conditions are factors in getting a good water workout. All you need is the will to climb into a swimsuit.
In the deep water Wet Sweat class you move the whole body to complete a movement. And you are not only working harder, you are softening the look of the muscles and getting longer muscle movement and flexibility. Take a class in the Wet Sweat program this summer and discover water exercise. It’s fun, a challenge and it’s a welcome change from a floor workout.
