'Match Point' ---'Woody Allen’s most commercial, successful movie
If you’re tired of Woody Allen’s take on the bumbling hero, check out “Match Point” at the Carson Library. This is his firs thriller, although the thrills are not all that exciting. It’s the story of a pro tennis player who isn’t getting anywhere until he falls in with a wealthy British family, chiefly with the daughter. All’s well and Chris (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) moves into the family’s business as an executive, complete with driver and limo.Meanwhile, he runs into another American Nola (Scarlett Johanson), a lush blonde who knows what sex is all about. The two have an affair while Chris attempted to get his wife pregnant. It all becomes too complex for Chris he finally gets his wife with child and Nola demands that he
split with the wife as she is now pregnant. The climax is a double murder (no details, it would spoil the plot) and it looks bad for Chris as one Scotland Yard cop has him nailed. But a lucky accident clears Chris and he is off the hook.Much of the film is too predictable, but the acting is OK (Johansson does a good job as the slutty woman wronged. Film runs two ours and four minutes, rated R, released on 2005. It was Allen’s’s most financially successful film at the time.
