I always talk about pruning evergreens after a hard freeze. Why? With the cold, borers and bark beetles are no longer flying ready to attack trees. Since every pruning cut is a wound and these insects are attracted to the chemical signals sent out from wounds, we can avoid insects infesting and weakening trees, particularly drought-stressed trees.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Sunday afternoon to a vehicle crash near the intersection of South Carson and Clearview. The crash involves two vehicles, one with a utility trailer that rolled on its side.

There are a series of ponds behind the Western Nevada College campus in the Vicee Canyon. The ponds are fed by runoff from Hobart Lake from time to time. Walking along the trails near the canyon, with my dog, we could hear the sound of running water and when we came upon the ponds they were full and water was rushing from one to the next lower one.

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has begun the annual process of closing recreational facilities around Lake Tahoe for the winter season. Seasonal closures apply to many National Forest recreation sites including beaches, campgrounds, picnic areas and forest roads.

Barrio Manouche takes an audience on a journey with a fusion of cultures and musical backgrounds. The San Francisco-based acoustic ensemble performs a repertoire of original compositions with a sound that is difficult to classify.

Barrio Manouche will perform at the CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda in Minden, at 7 p.m. Friday, November 12, 2021. Tickets are $20 members, $22 general audience, and kids under 18 are free with a paid adult ticket.

The Lyon County Library Foundation presents the third annual Masquerade Ball on Saturday, Oct. 23 beginning at 6 p.m.

Saturday, October 16 and Sunday, October 17 have been designated “White Cane Days” by the Carson City Host Lions Club.

Lions will be available at the North Carson Street Save Mart from 10 to 4 each day to bring awareness to the public of the sight preservation programs the Lions support, and to raise funds as part of the annual White Cane Days.

Two classrooms within the Western Nevada College's childcare facility at their Carson City location are closed for an undisclosed amount of time due to an outbreak of COVID-19.

At 9 AM, October 16, Saturday, cars and motorcycles will assemble at the Fleischman Planetarium in Reno, where they will be decorated with posters, festooned with flags and surrounded by banners.

At 9:30 AM, a news conference will be held by MARR PLAN Campaign's Jackie Oliveri and MARR PLAN originator Anthony Marr, followed by brief media interviews for participants. At 10 AM, the motorcade will depart from Reno and drive the 31 miles to Carson City.

The Tahoe Mountain Milers Running Club will be hosting the 32nd running of Nevada Day Classic 2M/8K, on October 30 at 8 AM, at the Carson City Nugget.
This is a classic road course through the beautiful streets of the historic West Side of Carson City. The races precede the Nevada Day Parade celebrating Nevada's entry into the Union with a course finish down the main drag of Carson City with spectators lining the way.

All runners of all distances will receive a custom wooden medal! The first 200 runners that register are guaranteed a t-shirt!

Carson City local, Shane Trotter, has done it again: Trotter won the 24 Hour World Time Trial Championships for his age group in 2019, and he wanted to go back in 2020, but the event was cancelled due to Covid.

Trotter has been heavily training for these and other Ultra Cycling events for the past 4 years. He and his wife Nikki Trotter own a local Spin Studio, Life Cycle Spin and Yoga. Trotter does a lot of his training while teaching classes at the spin studio.

Carson Valley Medical Center executives, board members and community leaders were on hand Friday, Oct. 15, to break ground on the medical center’s expansion project.

Carson Valley Community Theatre presents, the southern-fried mid-life crisis comedy "Rex's Exes" coming this October at the CVIC Hall in Minden.

The fourth annual Burgers for Badges fundraiser to support the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office raised $15,000. The money was presented to Sheriff Coverley and will go toward the department’s operations and specialty programs.
