At last, and finally, this summer, the International Olympic Committee reinstated my hero, Jim Thorpe, as the gold medal winner of the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Thorpe was the first Native American to win a gold medal for the United States. After winning both events by wide margins, he was hailed by King Gustav V of Sweden as, “the greatest athlete in the world,” to wit, Jim responded, “Thanks King.”

Zampona students will hold a recital at the Dayton Senior Center this Friday

Dayton, Nevada - This summer a group of Dayton adults have been learning to play a traditional Andean instrument, the zampoña flute, with Nevada Arts Council Teaching Artists Carlos Ocampo and Julie Lozada Ocampo of Kantu Inka.

They will demonstrate what they’ve learned on their Andean pan flutes, joining Julie and Carlos for a performance at the Dayton Senior Center on Friday, August 12 at 6pm.

SILVER CITY — The next STEM + Arts event in Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties summer program for kids and their parents is Tuesday, August 9 at 10 a.m.

Jewels is a sweet, loving, beautiful girl who has been through the flames, risen from the ashes and is hoping for a loving forever home for the rest of her life. A long haired girl who loves to be brushed, she is a strong and healthy 12 years young. Since many cats live to be 20 or older, Jewels likely has some good years left to share with the right loving human companion.

Carson City’s 19th annual Jazz & Beyond Music & Art Festival, presented by the Mile High Jazz Band Association, offers 17 days of free entertainment and more than 30 performances.

Monday, August 8 host Brother Dan Palmer will be joined by Jimmy Rossi at Bank Saloon in Carson City. The two will chat about all of the projects and appearances in the singer/multi-instrumentalist’s near future, while they play a wide ranging set of music.

UPDATE 4:24PM: The National Weather Service has extend its Flood Advisory to 7:15 p.m. Flooding from excessive rainfall is expected. 1.8-2.2" of rainfall has fallen in the past hour. Minor flooding in low-lying/poor drainage areas and dangerous flows over low-water crossings are expected.

A Flood Advisory is in effect west of Gardnerville Ranchos including NV/CA-88 until 3:45 p.m. Thursday. Doppler radar indicated heavy rain from thunderstorms, with radar estimated accumulations of 1.5 inches. As of 2:28 p.m. there are reports of road flooding between Foothill and Centerville in Douglas County.

UPDATE 3:56PM: The Flash Flood Warning issued by the National Weather Service has been extended to 5:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service in Reno issued a Flash Flood Warning Thursday afternoon for the Tamarack burn scar areas in Douglas County in Nevada and Alpine and Northern Mono County in California.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Thursday it has signed a cooperative agreement with Nevada under the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program. Through LFPA, the Nevada Department of Agriculture seeks to purchase and distribute locally grown, produced, and processed food from underserved producers.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to reject Tahoe Hemp LLC’s proposed settlement in the amount of $400,000 after, they say, the city breached a contract with the company that had planned on growing agricultural hemp on Buzzy’s Ranch.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors agreed by a 4-1 vote Thursday to a subordination agreement for the affordable housing project Sierra Flats so that developers could acquire loan funding to complete the project.

The portion of the project being discussed was Phase 1, which developers hope to have a groundbreaking for near the end of the month once additional funding has been secured.

A 22-yer-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of a vehicle burglary that happened last month, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

At 3:03 p.m. Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. The expected rainfall rate is 0.25 inches in 15 minutes.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 3 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Crowell Boardroom of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division is looking for witnesses to a fatal crash that happened Tuesday, August 2 involving a semi on Interstate 80, mile marker 106 in the Lovelock area.
