Local Rotarians will have the opportunity to learn more about the service organizations regional and national plans when the organization’s District Governor visits the Rotary Club of Carson City at its August 22 meeting.

Due to staffing shortages at Sand Harbor State Park, the Nevada Division of State Parks will be closing the boat ramp and adjacent parking lot within the park on Wednesdays and Thursdays, beginning August 23.

During these closures, the public will need to use the boat ramp at Cave Rock State Park or another public boat ramp.

The last performance of the Levitt AMP summer concert series takes place this Saturday at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City, located at 449 W. King St.

The final performance features Shamarr Allen as headliner, and the fun begins at 7 p.m.

In addition to year-round restricted areas, enhanced fire restrictions are now in effect on National Forest lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin and will remain in effect through the end of December 2023, or until rescinded. Enhanced fire restrictions mean wood and charcoal fires are now prohibited in Blackwood Canyon, Luther Pass, and Watson Lake campgrounds. Portable stoves are allowed with a valid permit.

A 30-year-old Carson City man, Stephen Barns, was arrested in the 4000 block of S. Curry Tuesday evening for felony kidnapping, eluding with endangerment, obstruction, and possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - There have been two major crashes at the intersection of US50 and SR28 on Spooner Summit in recent weeks, one of those crashes claiming the life of a 61-year-old man from Washington. UPDATE 2:52PM: A small, 15x15-foot brush fire, caused by a lightning strike, was extinguished in the Goni Pit area Monday afternoon by a single brush engine, according to Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Micah Horton. There were no injuries or property damage.

The Nevada Women’s Fund is pleased to announce that a $25,000 grant has been awarded to Carson City area non-profit Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH. Since its inception in 1982, the NWF has distributed more than $9.4 million in scholarships and grants to empower achievement in women and families in Northern Nevada.

Last week, The Nevada Women's Fund (NWF) awarded FISH their Annual Community Grant of $25,000.

This grant award will be devoted to the FISH Student Housing project and help alleviate the housing costs for women living within. This way, the women can focus on their higher education without the burden of housing costs which will empower their learning potential, uplift families out of generational poverty, and strengthen the community. This is a major recognition for FISH with Nevada Women's Fund's support of this first-of-its-kind Nevada pilot program.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the World Championship Single-Jack Rock Drill Competition which takes place at the annual Nevada Day Celebration in Carson City. Single-jack rock drilling is the process of using a 4 pound hammer and a 3/4-inch steel carbon chisel to drill by hand into a large chunk of granite.

A friend asked me recently if I had planted all the sunflowers in my yard. The answer is no. They are all volunteers that probably started with birds dropping seeds. For years I have let them grow because the goldfinches love eating their seeds. My neighbor Patrick Mobley had an open house to display his model train layout. The open house happens around twice twice a year at his Pine Lane home in Carson City — one in summer and another, usually, in the fall.
