Mark is experienced in writing about complex and nuanced topics in easy-to-understand ways. In addition to his government beat, he also writes the RGJ's Fact Checker and Ask the RGJ columns. Mark is a 1987 graduate of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas.

Just after 12 p.m. Saturday the southbound lanes or I-580 were closed near Fairview due to a crash with injury.

As of 12:55 p.m. the lanes are still closed.

The nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties (HCC) is currently recruiting for part time and full time AmeriCorps members to help make a difference in rural Nevada communities by teaching financial literacy to children, teens and adults. AmeriCorps is a national program that connects individuals and organizations to help communities tackle challenges and improve lives and communities.

Carson City Supervisors recently rejected a recommendation from the city's Growth Management Commission that would have designated a portion of available building permits specifically for affordable housing units.

The proposal would have increased growth allocations by 3 percent, with 2 percent for market-rate housing and 1 percent set aside for affordable housing starts specifically targeting workforce housing.

While Mayor Lori Bagwell cited her denial in language and definition concerns, Supervisor Maurice White stated that Carson City “has enough affordable housing.”

Thursday night, deputies were dispatched to a suspicious suspect near a local ranching supply store who was reportedly talking to himself and "asking for people," according to the report.

Carson City Supervisors voted Thursday to bar Carson City Save Marts from selling liquor at their locations after it was determined that the corporation, which operates three stores including FoodMaxx within the capital city, has been operating without a valid liquor manager for the past 15 months.

Carson City Supervisors voted Thursday to approve union agreements with both the Carson City Fire Fighters Association, as well as the Carson City Sheriff’s Supervisory Association.

The agreement with the Carson City Sheriff’s Association will retroactively apply a salary adjustment to employees with a rank of sergeant from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2028, with an estimated impact of $4.8 million.

According to Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon, the landfill fire was extinguished early Monday after burning for a little over five days.

Shortly before 5 p.m. late Wednesday afternoon, firefighters were dispatched to the landfill for what was initially reported as a 50 foot by 50 foot active fire. The landfill was closed Thursday while firefighters worked to suppress the flames, but reopened on Friday for the public.

Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division confirms one person died and one suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries in a crash Tuesday afternoon involving a commercial tour bus and a single vehicle on US-50 West at Spooner Summit.

According to NHP, the preliminary information known is that an Amador Stagecoach tour bus with 17 passengers was traveling westbound on US-50. An SUV traveling southbound on SR 28 made a left onto US-50 east to Carson City. For unconfirmed reasons, the two vehicles collided.
