CARSON CITY — Governor Steve Sisolak signed an emergency directive on Monday to provide flexibility for the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation to hire non-merit, or contracted, staff to help process unemployment insurance claims.

CARSON CITY — Nearly two dozen Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students claimed more than 40 top-10 awards including five state championships at the Nevada State Business Leadership Conference.

UPDATE 5:10PM: The fires are 80 percent contained, and burned around 30 acres. A number of power poles were damaged, according to Truckee Meadows Fire. The cause is under investigation.

Fire agencies throughout the region, including Carson City, responded Sunday afternoon to brush fires burning in the Wadsworth area east of Reno and north of Fernley near Interstate 80 in Washoe County.

On Sunday morning a pair of balloonists meandered across the skies of Carson City. Coming from the southeast they were eventually lost behind the trees heading toward Silver Oak Golf Course.

Quad-County Emergency Operations Center in Carson City is reporting Saturday, May 9, a second death due to COVID-19 in the Quad-County region. The individual was a male Carson City resident in his 60’s. It is unknown at this time if he had underlying conditions.

Carson High School will hold a drive-through ceremony Saturday, June 6, with varying times throughout the day where graduating seniors and their families will stay in their single vehicle until it's time for the graduate to exit their car, have their name announced on the loudspeaker as they walk across a stage erected on the northwest lawn (near the blue and white concrete ‘CHS’ sign), collect their diploma, have their picture taken, return to their vehicle and then proceed to the exit.

Just before 2 p.m. Friday afternoon a vehicle fire involving a horse trailer was reported 8 miles up the hill from Spooner.

The horses were removed from the trailer and were out of harms way.

However, the fire was reported to be spreading towards brush at 1:56 p.m.

Motorists should seek alternate routes.

At 1:36 p.m. Friday afternoon a vehicle accident was reported at the intersection of Highway 50 and Lompa.

Whether there are injuries are unknown at this time.

Motorists should avoid the area or use caution if an alternative route is not possible.

Finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) show initial claims for unemployment insurance totaled 28,550 for the week ending May 2, down 13,991 claims, or 32.9 percent compared to last week’s total of 42,541.
