Carson City area weather: Showers, gusty conditions ahead prompt Wind Advisory
The spring warm up will take a brief hiatus this week around the Carson City region as a weather system will move through the area, bringing gusty winds, with showers and high elevation snow late Monday into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures this week will be much cooler, with highs 5-10 degrees below average for Tuesday and Wednesday. Some rural areas could see freezes Wednesday and Thursday morning. Shower chances will remain through Thursday as active weather continues.
A Wind Advisory is in effect Monday from 1 to 9 p.m. for much of the region. Forecasters say winds will be from the southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph possible. Wind prone areas along Highway 395 from
Susanville to the Carson Valley could occasionally gusts over 55 mph.
The weather service advises the gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Cross winds could impact high profile vehicles as well. It may be a good idea to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away.
For the Carson City region, there's a 30 percent chance of rain Monday evening, a 40 percent chance Tuesday, and a slight chance of rain Tuesday evening. Daytime highs Monday will be around 70, and by Tuesday, highs may struggle to reach 60.
Around the Lake Tahoe Basin, there's a 40 percent chance of showers Monday night, a 50 percent chance Tuesday and a slight chance Tuesday evening. Daytime highs will around 60 on Monday and upper 40s on Tuesday.
Snow levels may dip to the 6,500 to 7,000 foot elevation early Tuesday morning and remain near 7,000 to 7,500 feet through the day Tuesday, although snowfall rates and amounts are expected to remain quite light — less than 3 inches expected near the Sierra crest — with low potential for travel impacts over the main Sierra passes, according to the weather service.
