It may be hard to believe, but February is just around the corner. Although there are usually storms around Presidents’ weekend, some days in February are often relatively mild. I remember temperatures in the low 70s some years. And, while those warmer days are welcome, newbies to the area often think winter is over and get anxious to start gardening again. Long-time Northern Nevada gardeners know better.

This week Carson High School is proud to present Cooper Eaton as the Senior in the Spotlight. Cooper is an excellent student-athlete at Carson High and has great aspirations for himself after he graduates. During his time here, he has excelled in the classroom and currently holds a 4.17 weighted GPA. On top of that, he has also completed 12 honors-level courses at CHS.

News reporters tend to mingle with a wider variety of people than those in most other professions. I happen to know this because for 15 years before Mark Twain tapped me on the shoulder, I was a radio reporter, a malnourished profession at the time that I might have killed-off single-handedly.

The Northern Nevada Cultural Foundation, a (501-c-3), in Partnership with the Alpha Nu Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and other Divine 9 organizations presents the 2nd Annual Capital City Black History Program at Western Nevada College 2201 W. College Parkway inside the Rotunda. This program will be on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023 at 6 p.m.

Carson Girls Softball is a non-profit organization committed to providing young ladies (ages 3 to 18) in the Carson City area the opportunity to play recreational softball in an organized environment. The program has been around for over 25 years and had thousands of young ladies play over the years!

Clarification: A Carson Now reader submitted two photos Saturday via Facebook instant message and left the following message: "A very healthy mountain lion relaxing at the end of Woodridge Circle in Timberline Thursday, January 19 2023."

Of the two photos, the main photo was taken by Connie Thompson. We reached out to Connie who explained that on Wednesday, Jan. 18, she called contacted NDOW because the mountain lion (as seen in the first photo) was acting sick and was not healthy.

A 75-year-old man was arrested Thursday for a misdemeanor warrant alleging domestic battery, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

At 2:19 p.m. a crash was reported in the area of Market and College Parkway.

A single vehicle vehicle appears to have ran into a pole and injuries are reported.

The Parent Teacher Organization and administrators at Bordewich Bray Elementary School in Carson City helped engage positive male role models Friday morning where more than 600 people attended “Dads and Donuts.”

The effort was designed to get dads, uncles, grandparents and father-figures more involved in school and childhood learning.

The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Carson City Superintendent of Schools Andrew Feuling. Having served as the district's chief financial officer for eight years, he was able to hit the ground running when promoted to the top job in July. His presentation will provide insights into how successful Carson City's schools have been at implementing the district's "learner-centered" model, which focuses instruction on what the individual student needs to know and be able to do.

Just after 5 p.m. a three car crash approximately two miles from the intersection of Highway 50 and S. Carson Street up Spooner Junction was reported.

One vehicle reportedly spun out and was then hit by two other vehicles in the westbound lanes (heading up to Tahoe from Carson City).

Thirty cultural organizations across Nevada have been awarded $194,110 in Major Project Grants by Nevada Humanities.

These grants fund humanities projects across the state and benefit nonprofit organizations and government and tribal entities, including libraries, museums, and schools to fund public and educational programs in the humanities. Nevada Humanities Major Project Grants offer up to $7,500 to facilitate local cultural programs and explore issues that matter to Nevadans.

On Thursday, Jan. 19, 2023, the Lyon County Board of County Commissioners voted to approve a three-year employment contract with Andrew Haskin to serve as the permanent County Manager.

Mr. Haskin has served as interim County Manager since September 2022 and as the Lyon County Community Development Director since August 2021. The motion to approve Mr. Haskin as the County Manager was made by Commissioner Wes Henderson and approved unanimously.

The Prison Hill Fire of 2021 swept across 171 acres of land following a dry lightning storm which started multiple fires in a the span of only a few minutes. The burn scar can still be seen — including how close it came to the houses in the area.

However, that burn scar will disappear with time if the plans initiated by Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space are successful.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called early Thursday evening to a vehicle crash involving as many as four vehicles in the area of Highway 50 East and Airport Road.

Carson City Supervisors approved American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to three Carson City non-profit projects on Thursday, helping transition individuals experiencing homelessness into permanent shelter.

Funding comes from the remaining $1.16 million ARPA funds provided by the federal government in 2021 and approved by supervisors to be used for projects or programs that support the Carson City Housing Plan.

Several wild horses were on the move Thursday afternoon in the area of East College Parkway near Research Way in Carson City. One horse was seen crossing the roadway. Motorists should use caution and be watchful for them while driving in the area.

The Nevada Department of Transportation will begin emergency work on Friday, Jan. 20 to clear State Route 208 through the Wilson Canyon in Lyon County following a major landslide.

Additional funding was approved Thursday for the Ron Wood Family Resource Center in Carson City by unanimous vote of the Carson City board of Supervisors.

The center previously requested and was approved for $120,000 and $100,000 during 2022 for the Ron Wood Family Support for COVID-19 Rental Assistance Program.

Nevada lost 1,300 jobs in December, according to the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s final monthly economic report of 2022.

On Wednesday, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office produced a media release requesting the public’s assistance with identification of an attempted kidnapping suspect from an incident that occurred at the CVS Pharmacy located at 1980 N. Carson Street on Jan. 16.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — The Nevada Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, better known as Nevada WIC, has received one of four nationally grant funded awards from the Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition to test the integration of WIC online ordering using the WICShopper app.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public's help in identifying an attempted kidnapping suspect. On Monday, Jan. 16 at approximately 4:56 p.m. the suspect, who has frequented the location, went into the CVS Pharmacy located at 1980 N. Carson Street.

A vehicle pursuit late Wednesday morning that began in Douglas County ended in Carson City near Bodines Casino with at least one person in custody after apparently crashing into another vehicle.

A quick-moving cold storm will impact the Sierra, Carson City and surrounding counties overnight through Thursday morning, bringing potential travel disruptions to the morning commute, the National Weather Service in Reno advises.
