A tradition since 1988, Carson High Safe Grad was started by the community following a series of alcohol-related graduation night incidents and deaths. Safe Grad is an all-night graduation party held at the Carson City Community Center celebrating students completing their education while also preventing the use of alcohol and drugs, including drunk driving.

For the last several years, the Carson City Aquatic Center has had its fair share of staffing shortages, especially for lifeguards, in what is a nationwide trend.

The Carson City School District took time at the School Board meeting Tuesday night to recognize 22 individuals with the “Distinguished Student Award.” The student winners were selected by administrators and recognized from their respective schools as having specific qualities, skills and characteristics that distinguished them.

A 40-year-old woman was arrested Monday for suspicion of domestic battery and simple battery, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

As Senate Bill 80 (SB80), the education measure advocating for head injury and concussion legislation, advances through the legislative process, Youth Legislator Stella Thornton, 18-year-old senior at Carson High School, on behalf of the Nevada Youth Legislature, took time last Thursday, May 4, 2023, to further present SB80 to the Nevada Assembly Committee on Education.

For the first time in Carson City, the nationally recognized nonprofit Green Our Planet will host a student-run farmers market from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Nevada Capitol Building on Tuesday, May 16. Featuring five schools from northern Nevada, this coincides with the 10-year anniversary of Green Our Planet and their efforts to make a difference in the lives of children and in the world.

The Carson High School (CHS) Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) unit has received a perfect score of 5 during their recent inspection. Conducted by Captain Shane Tanner, commanding officer at Naval Air Station Fallon, the inspection evaluated the unit’s appearance and performance in several areas including Color Guard and Drill Demonstration.

The community is invited to Mills Park from 10:00am – 2:00pm on Saturday, May 20, 2023 for the 5th annual Kids to Parks Day event here in Carson City. The celebration will include music, food, outdoor activities from local organizations, educational booths, the Junior Park Ranger Olympics, and Junior Park Ranger Bike Races.

Carson City is seeking an artist or artist team to design, fabricate and install a free-standing, outdoor, original sculpture at the South Carson Street/South Stewart Street Roundabout. Carson City recently completed the South Carson Complete Streets Project, the largest corridor revitalization project in the City’s history. One of the focal points of the corridor revitalization is the roundabout at South Carson Street and South Stewart Street.

Carson City is seeking an artist or artist team to design, fabricate and install a free-standing, outdoor, original sculpture at the South Carson Street/South Stewart Street Roundabout.

The Capital City Arts Initiative is delighted to announce that its $500 2023 Aim scholarship was awarded to Paloma Moon from Douglas High School, for her Scarlett, pen & ink drawing. The award was juried from the "Spring Forward 2023" exhibition with art by 36 students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools.

East Fork Fire and Carson City Fire Department responded at around 5 p.m. Sunday for a brush fire burning in the area of Cary Creek Court and Autumn Hills Road in the Genoa area near Foothill Road, according to dispatch.

This is an introductory class on how to build, light and maintain a coal forge fire with a hand cranked blower, proper hammering techniques, drawing, pointing, twisting, punching and how to work hot steel over a coal forge. Students will take home the basic knowledge of forging and their own handmade forged decorative article.

About the Classes
• Class size is limited to a maximum of 6 students
• Taught by an experienced local smith and knife maker
• Cost is $100 per person with materials and tools supplied
• Participants must be members of the California Blacksmith Association

So, who can a single mother of two who lives an hour away from the nearest nursing school count on to make her dream of becoming a forensic nurse possible?

Unquestionably, it’s Western Nevada College’s ROADS program.

Green Central is the place to be, Saturday, May 13, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., for the The Greenhouse Project's 14th annual Mother's Day Plant Sale. Plants are currently available on-line. These sales will be suspended Saturday through Wednesday, May 17 to allow staff to restock inventory.

Carson High School Baseball Seniors were asked to choose one teacher or coach who has made an impact in their lives thus far. They then presented them with a personalized jersey and invited them to Senior Night, which took place this past Wednesday.

It was a special way for these players to thank an educator or coach for being a role model to them.

Well done seniors, and well done teachers and coaches.

Jan Loverin to present CCHS lecture May 19 in person and on Zoom

Carson City Historical Society (CCHS) is proud to host a lecture/presentation by Jan Loverin, curator of the Marjorie Russell Textile Museum, on "Victorian Fashions and Dress Reform" on Friday, May 19, 2023, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public. It will be held in the Carriage House, 1207 North Carson Street, Carson City, Nevada. We will be offering light refreshments. No RSVP is necessary.

Every few years I have certified arborists prune our trees. They always chip anything smaller than what we can use for firewood, generating a mountain of wood chips for me. I use wood chips throughout our landscaped acre, everywhere there isn’t lawn.
