The road to the NIAA 4A State Championships is always difficult, but the Carson High softball team seems to have received as favorable path as possible. Two Northern 4A teams will advance to state and it figures that High Desert League champion Spanish Springs is the heavy favorite to earn one of those berths. And since Carson isn't in the Cougars' bracket, the Senators could be one of the darkhorses to grab that second spot to state.

After watching rain turn to snow through the afternoon, Colin McCulloch couldn't have been happier when opening round play in the Northern 4A Regional Boys Golf Tournament was finally suspended on Monday afternoon at Empire Ranch Golf Course.
"I'm so cold right now," the Carson High sophomore said afterward, glancing out on a course where snow was starting to stick. "It was pretty tough. Starting on 15, I could barely grip the club."

As I've been talking to people about this project, I've collected a number of questions, that I put together below.

RENO -- It's the nature of baseball. Former Western Nevada College star Brian Barnett and Carson City's Jesse Rasner played well enough for the University of Nevada baseball team, but in the end it wasn't good enough.

For both Barnett and Rasner, each were pondering one at-bat that left them thinking about what could have been. And the end result was a 6-4 win in 12 innings for San Jose State against Nevada on Sunday at Peccole Park. The Spartans avoided the four-game sweep after the Wolf Pack won the first three games of the series.

The celebration was at the platform of the historic Wabuska Depot. Numerous local, state and federal officials and noted railroad historians participated in the event, trading stories and history references, and taking turns riding the car.

The Bernhard family, donors of the car, were the honored guests.

It's all come down to the next three weekends as far as Northern 4A track and field athletes and coaches are concerned. Of course, the state meet is the ultimate goal, but first comes the Northern 4A Regionals, which get under way Saturday with the prelims at Damonte Ranch High in Reno.

The finals will be held at Damonte Ranch next Saturday and the top three finishers ineach event qualify to advance to the NIAA State Championships, also at Damonte Ranch.

The kid's will be doing fencing and archery demonstrations through out the day and there will be live music by Tuck Williams and Michelle Supelana-Mix.

In previewing the Northern 4A Regional Track and Field Championships, there might not be a more loaded event when it comes to sheer depth than the boys pole vault.

Seven athletes have cleared 13-9 or better -- including the Carson High tandem of Eric Garcia and Cameron Childers -- and on Saturday a jump of 12-6 was needed to advance past the regional prelims at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno. Garcia and Childers both made their attempts at 12-6 to qualify for the field of nine vaulters in the finals.

A pennant race is a pennant race no matter if it's for first or second place.

And for the Western Nevada College baseball team, the race for second place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference went down to the wire. College of Southern Nevada was finally helping out the Wildcats after losing the first three games of its series at Salt Lake Community College.

To hear Jordan Lewis talk about it, fellow pitcher David Carroll was the main target of the University of Houston. But Western Nevada College baseball coach D.J. Whittemore said Houston wanted Lewis all along.

It all worked out in the end as Carroll signed with Maryland and Lewis recently signed with Houston. "They originally came here scouting Carroll," said Lewis about Houston. "They just started to kind of notice me."

Harvey Field.

Carson knew it would have third-place in the Sierra League locked up with a win in the opener after losses by Bishop Manogue and Fallon on Thursday.

Step away from your computers, get out and enjoy the day.
