With the holiday travel period beginning this weekend, the National Weather Service says warm weather will last through Friday with a storm expected to bring gusty winds Saturday with snowfall in the Sierra by Sunday.

RENO — Reno-Tahoe International Airport anticipates more than 15,000 passengers will arrive and depart daily from the airport during the peak travel times leading up to Christmas and New Year's. The airport advises passengers to arrive early and allow time for parking, airline check-in and long TSA security lines.

UPDATE: The cause of death has yet to be determined by the Washoe County Medical Examiners Office. No evidence of foul play was located and exposure to the elements may be a factor in the man's death, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

The Washoe County Medical Examiners Office has identified the body of a man discovered by a hiker Tuesday in the hills north of Carson City.

MINDEN, Nev. — Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies on Wednesday made contact with what appeared to be a disabled motorcycle on State Route 88 near Centerville Lane. Contact was made with the driver, identified as 29-year-old Jesse Martinez.

The Forest Service office in South Lake Tahoe and the North Lake Tahoe Visitor Center in Tahoe City still have Christmas tree permits available.

There is no excuse for driving under the influence, make plans now and stay safe later. As Carson City residents make plans to celebrate the coming holidays, the Carson City Sheriffs Office and other Nevada law enforcement agencies ask that you make sure those plans include viable alternatives to driving under the influence.

I was scrolling around on Facebook today and ran into a post. “Once you are in a relationship, you think it’s going to last forever. In reality, it only lasts as long as you are both working for it. If one of you stops working, it falls apart.” Lots of comments in agreement were posted. There were lots of likes and loves. My viewpoint is slightly different.

CARSON CITY — The Carson High School Girls Cross Country Team was honored as the 2019 NIAA Academic State Champions at the close of the season, averaging the best GPA of all 4A schools in the state at a 3.96.

The Carson Senators Ski Team opened the 2019-20 season at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort Tuesday. The Senators were missing quite a few skiers because of Final Exams, but still were able to make a respectable showing.

The Carson girls team was led by the Senators two returning state qualifiers from last year. Junior Brynn Prunty was 21st and Sophomore Sarah Wiggins was 24th. Junior Brooke Gudmundson was 48th.

The spirit of Christmas is in the air as we head into the final stretch of the work week. Thursday events around the capital city feature an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, a Carson City tradition with the return of Joyful Noise Holiday Community Show at the Brewery Arts Center and more.

The U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force on Wednesday arrested Michael Alexander Candelario in Phoenix, Arizona for a failure to appear warrant issued out of Carson City.

CARSON CITY — Empire Elementary School hosted the second of four Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Parent Nights Tuesday, Dec. 17. More than 250 participants gathered last night to experience fun hands-on experiments and student-showcased STEM projects, which were taught throughout the last quarter of activities and learning.

UPDATE: A 23-year-old Carson City man who died Friday from multiple gunshot wounds was tried and acquitted at a Lake Tahoe court earlier this year on charges of indecent exposure and lewdness with a child under the age of 12, court records show. Kyle Sullivan Bryan was found not guilty by a jury on both counts on April 11, 2019 in El Dorado County Superior Court in South Lake Tahoe.

A Carson City man who died from multiple gunshots Friday in what is being investigated as a possible homicide on Washoe Tribe land was arrested in 2018 for warrants out of South Lake Tahoe for alleged lewdness with a child.

Despite our increasing population and existing traffic congestion, the City has plans for a road diet on South Carson Street. What does that mean? In this case, it means reducing the street from six lanes to four from Appion Way to 8th Street, with an additional reduction to one northbound lane north of 8th.

CARSON CITY — As part of the AVID 8 (Advancement Via Individual Determination), eight graders from Eagle Valley Middle School took time to read books to elementary students, kindergarten through second grade, at Fremont and Seeliger Elementary schools in Carson City, Friday, Dec. 6, 2019.

Nevada state agencies participated in the Toys for Tots 2019 drive. Toys were donated at state buildings and agencies, then delivered to the State Capitol in Carson City for a final pick-up Tuesday by Santa, joined by Joyce Buckingham, Toys for Tots Executive Director for Carson City, Douglas, Storey and Lyon counties.

It was a cold day, but a beautiful one to have a wrapping party at Home Instead Senior Care in Carson City. We had a big turn out with volunteers who came Saturday to wrap over 400 presents for our seniors in the community.

UPDATE 5:14PM: From Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong: At approximately 1:48 p.m., a hiker in the hills between Carson Tahoe Hospital and Lakeview Estates discovered the remains of a deceased older male. The remains were largely buried in snow. Detectives have processed the scene and removed the body for transport to the Washoe County Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy, scheduled for Thursday. Identification of the remains and cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner. No other information is available at this time.

The South Carson Street project design is complete. The project team is pleased to announce the completion of the project design after nearly a year of design progression since the initial public kick-off meeting on December 11, 2018. During the design phase, the project team has conducted over 20 public meetings to gather useful feedback on various project features.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Transportation is advising motorists of new flashing yield signs being tested and activated on certain Interstate 580 Carson City Freeway on-ramps beginning Wednesday, Dec. 18.

The new yield signs located at the base of both northbound and southbound I-580 on-ramps from College Parkway and U.S. 50 East, William Street feature flashing yellow beacon lights at the top.

A group stands by Christmas gifts near a Christmas tree

A 34-year-old man was arrested Monday for suspicion of eluding, resisting, warrants and suspected possession of heroin, a Carson City sheriff's deputy report states.

East Fork Fire Protection District and Carson City Fire Department were called Tuesday morning to a structure fire in the 1000 block of Mica Drive near the county line.

Arriving first responders reportedly knocked down the small fire, which was in the attic of a residence. The fire was reported at around 9:30 a.m. No injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation.

Nevada Division of Child and Family Services hosted its annual Sweets With Santa Event Saturday, Dec. 14 in Carson City for the area’s foster youth thanks to our local community partners.

This Saturday, Dec. 21, the Lighthouse Bar in Carson City is hosting a “Pink Party” charity event with money to be donated to the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center.
