On Friday, July 1, Lake Tahoe’s Sierra Nevada University was acquired by the University of Nevada, Reno.

As of July, the Incline Village college, previously Sierra Nevada College, which first opened its doors in the fall of 1969 with 23 students, will go forward as the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe.

On Friday, it was revealed that a family of 7 were living inside of storage rooms within the Northern Nevada Children’s Museum in Carson City with weapons and drugs after the father of the family, Wilbert Calhoun, was arrested for suspicion of child neglect.

While the Children’s Museum Board stated it must have been a very recent development, and that they had never received any complaints and had no knowledge anything at the museum was amiss, parents have a different story.

Carson High School graduate Hayden Breiter won one of the nation’s highest awards at the 2022 SkillsUSA Championships, held in Atlanta, this past June 22-23, 2022. Kasey Kemmet, Carson High School SkillsUSA advisor, accompanied Breiter to Atlanta. Breiter was awarded a Skill Point Certificate in Restaurant Service.

More than 300 volunteers, an eight-person dive team, and one beach-cleaning robot spread out across five Lake Tahoe beaches Tuesday in a collaborative effort to remove leftovers from July 4th celebrations, as part of the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s annual Keep Tahoe Red, White and Blue Beach Cleanup.

Retired USFS Ranger and published author Frank Tortorich leads this hike by asking “Do you see what you are looking at?” and urges people to see glaciation and more in the forest they think they know. A meander over a couple of miles, pausing to appreciate the many hidden treasures of the forest. All participants will leave with knowledge of the forest! This event is 1-2 hours to Frog Lake. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office arrested a total of 30 persons between July 2 and July 4, 2022, which included both the Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley areas. The arrests included the following:

Organizers of the July 4 fireworks show that was cancelled at the last minute by the Carson City Fire Department due to wind conditions, has been rescheduled for this Saturday, July 9, between 9:15 and 9:30 p.m. wind permitting at Mills Park.

The preliminary hearing surrounding the kidnapping and murder of 18-year-old Fernley resident Naomi Irion has been postponed.

The Nevada Humane Society has officially kicked off its Duck, Duck, Cat promotion Tuesday in advance of the annual Duck Race event August 27 at Wingfield Park in Reno. For the next two weeks when people buy $90 worth of ducks to support the duck race, they can get a free cat or kitten.

Summer school students at Empire Elementary School in Carson City spent 20 minutes each morning to dedicate an engineering focus to create arcade games out of cardboard, tape, glue and other found materials. They collaborated, designed, tested and problem solved throughout the engineering process. On the last day of summer school, the students had fun playing each other’s games.

A 22-year-old man was arrested Friday for suspicion of possession of promotion of sexual performance conduct, child pornography and other alleged sex crimes, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office report.

SPARKS, Nev. — In a continuation of food security efforts to ensure food is available to those who need it, the Nevada Department of Agriculture is seeking to fund projects to improve food access, distribution and infrastructure in Nevada. A total of $9 million is available using American Rescue Plan Act funds through two grants in which community organizations, food banks, and public and Tribal entities engaged in food assistance activities are encouraged to submit projects for funding.

A brush fire near Cave Rock at Lake Tahoe briefly closed Highway 50 in both directions Monday night. It has since been reopened.

The 2022 Carson City Independence Day fireworks show hosted by RSVP, also known as Nevada Rural Counties Retired & Senior Volunteer Program, is happening Monday evening in Mills Park, with fireworks to begin around 9:30 p.m. Those watching are encouraged to tune into radio station Wild 102.9 FM for synchronized music accompanying the display.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space announced it will continue preventative fire measures at the Prison Hill Off Highway Vehicle Area and the motorized trailhead/parking located on Golden Eagle Lane in Carson City. During days when there's a Red Flag wind warning issued, the trail will be closed.

Someone recently sent me a photo of a long-necked flying insect with long transparent wings that had been hanging out on one of her window screens. I recognized it, but couldn’t remember its name, so I googled “long-necked flying insects.”

Independence Day has arrived along with cooler temperatures and breezy conditions by this afternoon around the Carson City and Lake Tahoe region. The breezes should, however, calm some later in the evening in time for fireworks shows, according to National Weather Service forecasters.

Governor Steve Sisolak announced Thursday that $3,674,024 in Community Development Block Grant funds have been awarded to 17 projects in Carson City and rural Nevada.

An unseasonable weather system that is expected to move through the Lake Tahoe region over the weekend bringing cool temperatures and wind gusts, has prompted the postponement of the drone light shows planned in celebration of Independence Day on July 3 in Kings Beach and July 4 in Tahoe City. Incline Village’s drone shows on July 4 are still scheduled as planned.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is requesting assistance with locating two separate missing persons.

Around 3 p.m. on Friday Carson City deputies and first responders were dispatched to two separate crash incidences.

One occurred on Highway 50 and involved a motorcycle versus vehicle.

The other involved a rollover crash near College and Research Way.

The Lyon County Board of Commissioners met Wednesday Night (June 29, 2022) in Dayton to address adopting two Drainage Master Plans in Dayton and selecting a location to build a second bridge over the Carson River in Dayton.
