Major League Baseball’s Matt Williams is coming home. The Carson High School graduate who is a World Series winner and five-time All-Star will headline the 10th annual Western Nevada College Wildcats Athletics Gala Dinner on Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Downtown Reno Ballroom. The event will also benefit Carson High School baseball and softball.

Tickets are $100, with tables of 10 for $850 through December 31 and $1,000 afterward. They are available through the WNC Foundation at 445-3240 or at www.wnc.edu/wildcatsgala/.

A house in the 300 block of Bath Street in Carson City is being searched by a bomb squad Tuesday night and four homes have been evacuated after an elderly man informed authorities that he remembered having stored up to a case of dynamite in the walls of the home sometime between the 1950s and 1960s.

An initial search of the home at 306 Bath Street, about 300 yards from Fritsch Elementary school and at the intersection of Division, has indeed led to the discovery of four sticks of dynamite that were found in the garage of the home buried inside walls, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

A search for more dynamite will continue through the night with a bomb squad on the scene from Tahoe Douglas Explosive Ordnance Disposal and a support bomb squad to arrive from Reno.

A Carson City man faces a felony charge of home invasion after kicking in the door of Hot Springs Road apartment and entering the home.
Jason Philip Curry, 24, was arrested Dec. 2 by Carson City authorities after he was found walking and intoxicated near the home several minutes after breaking into it.

According to the arrest report two deputies were dispatched to the 600 block of Hot Springs Road for a reported break-in.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is pleased to announced that on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 10 a.m. the Sheriff's Motor Unit will donate $500 to the Carson City Chapter of the FACA (Fighters Against Child Abuse) at the gym located at 3179 Highway 50 East in Carson City.
FACA is a nationwide nonprofit 5010(c)(3) organization that aids children in the recovery of child abuse. Please check the FACA website at www.kochildabuse.com for more information on their services and specific information on what they do for children everywhere.

The Carson City Historical Society’s Christmas party will be Sunday, December 16, 2012 at the Bliss Mansion from 2 – 4 pm. We are sure to have a festive holiday afternoon at the lovely Bliss Mansion with hors d’oeurves, wine, and two kinds of entertainment. Dr. Michael Fischer, well-known Chautauqua speaker, will treat us to his impersonation of Governor John Sparks. The Lodge Assisted Living and Memory Care Community in Carson City will give busy caregivers a break this holiday season by offering free respite care for their elderly loved ones.

It’s often difficult for caregivers to find time for themselves and that challenge is compounded during the busy holiday season. Because of that, Lodge employees will offer the free respite help on December 12th and 19th from 11am to 3pm.

Following a weekend of torrential rains, the weather is expected to be clear for Friday night's annual tree lighting ceremony.
The Silver & Snowflakes Festival of Lights has expanded to a two-day celebration, begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday on the Capitol grounds where the state trees will be lit.
