CARSON CITY – A federal emergency unemployment benefit program will expire on Jan. 2, cutting off about 25,000 Nevadans from the program, a state agency reported today.

Friends and family of a missing Carson City man are concerned about his whereabouts and have asked the public for help finding him. The man's name is Jerry Santos, 68. He is 6 feet tall, weighs 175 pounds, gray hair, with hazel or green brown eyes. He is a resident of West Long Street, where he was last seen. Santos went missing, his friends report, at around 3 p.m.
"We're concerned about his well being," said friend Truckee Paxton.

A car driven by an elderly man crashed into the El Torito Bakery and Butcher shop in the 300 block of Winne Lane in Carson City at around 5 p.m. Tuesday. It was the second time within a week that a motorist had driven into a business.
The driver told Carson City fire and rescue that he doesn't know what happened and wasn't hurt but would like to go to the hospital. No one else appeared injured and drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor, said Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Eric Bero.

Proscenium Players will hold open auditions at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City for their March 2013 production of “The Underpants” directed by Jeff Whitt. Auditions will be held on Sunday, December 2 and Monday, December 3 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Maizie Harris-Jesse Theater, 449 West King Street, Carson City.

The 150-year-old Nevada State Prison in Carson CIty has been gathering cobwebs since it closed Jan. 4. And in a state without funds for anything new, its destiny might be a wrecking ball.
But there is a glimmer of hope that the capital city icon can be saved.

The Carson City School District is a finalist for millions of dollars in federal money through the U.S. Department of Education's Race to the Top program. Grants range from $5 million to $40 million.
Superintendent Richard Stokes said he learned the district was a finalist on Monday. There were 61 applications for the money.

The Business Branch of the Carson City Library at the Business Resource Innovation Center will be a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site again for the upcoming tax season. The VITA program offers free preparation of federal and state income tax returns to low-to-moderate income families in Northern Nevada who cannot prepare their own return.
