4Paws 4H dog club is hosting Part 2 of Deputy Officer Jimmy Surratt of the Carson City Sheriff's Department Canine Unit and his K-9, Ary, at its next meeting, Thursday, Sept. 19, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Fuji Park's Exhibit Hall.

He and Ary, a Belgian Malinois, will be demonstrating police training moves utlizing another officer in a bite suit. Then, Officer Surratt will have a brief question and answer period. Children age 5-19 are welcome to attend with their families. Contact the 4-H Extension Office at 887-2252 for further questions.

Nevada's third bear hunting season began on Sunday, and once again, it's being met with some controversy.

Nevada Wildlife Commissioners approved the state's first bear hunt in 2010, and since then, groups like No Bear Hunt NV have been fighting with the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) to end the practice.

Weather changes are headed our way with breezy conditions today followed by a cool down over the weekend, the National Weather Service reports.

A gusty weather front moving through the region has prompted the weather service to issue a Red Flag Warning today for Carson City and much of Western Nevada and along the Eastern Sierra until about 8 p.m.

With dry air moving in prior to the front's arrival and gusts from 35 to 45 mph, fire weather conditions will become critical. Humidity is expected to be between 10 to 18 percent.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Rural Housing Authority team was presented with the 2013 Pioneer in Housing Award (Large Agency) from Nan McKay & Associates at the 2013 NMA Housing Conference, held in San Diego earlier this month.

According to NMA the judges were greatly impressed by the Nevada Rural Housing Authority’s home financing program to expand homeownership opportunities in the rural parts of the state.

A Carson City man faces a felony charge of possessing stolen property, a laptop computer, and five misdemeanors after he was arrested Sept. 14 in the 2800 block of Carmine Street.

Eduardo Reyes, 43, was jailed with bail at $27,469. According to the arrest report, officers went to the residence of the man who had a confirmed warrant out of Carson City Justice Court for obstructing and driving without a valid license.

A Carson City man faces felony embezzlement, burglary and forgery charges after admitting to stealing $700 from his employer and then cooking up a story about how he was robbed and abducted. He admitted to stealing the money to pay off a drug debt.

Paul Joseph Bloomfield, 44, was arrested Sept. 13 in the 300 block of North Carson Street. He is also accused of attempting to cash a $1,000 stolen check from a dance studio.

The public is invited to a town hall meeting Monday night to discuss general issues related to Carson City. The meeting runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William Street.

There will be a panel of directors from the city's Finance, Fire, Health and Human Services, Human Resources, Information Technology, Parks and Recreation, Public Works and the Sheriff's Office. Additionally, the City Manager will also be in attendance and available to answer any questions.

A three-day trial in Lyon County ended with the conviction of a man accused of stealing property in Mound House and selling it for scrap.

James Vincent Golden, 54, of Reno, was found guilty on Sept. 13 on two counts of grand larceny, a category C felony, and one count of attempted grand larceny, a category D felony, at the Third Judicial District Court in Yerington. Jeremy Reichenberg, Senior Deputy District Attorney, and Orrin Johnson, Deputy District Attorney, prosecuted the case for the Lyon County District Attorney.
