With news this week that Western Nevada College is the recipient of a $1.5 million grant, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, announced two other grants for area colleges, Truckee Meadows Community College and Great Basin College.

The grants are part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grant Program, which was authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as the stimulus bill. WNC's portion of the grant is $1,567,530. TMCC received a grant of $ 3,201,968 and Great Basin College, $4,009,331.

A Carson City man turned himself into authorities Wednesday for an outstanding felony warrant, being a sex offender failing to change his address, issued out of Churchill County.

David Alan Wilson II, 30, turned himself into the front counter of the Carson City Sheriff's Office at 12:35 p.m. on the warrant service confirmed out of New River Township Justice Court as a sex offender failing to change address. Bail is $25,000 bondable. He was taken into custody without incident.

CARSON CITY — Western Nevada College students will have more opportunities to prepare for skilled technical jobs in the coming years, following Wednesday's announcement of a $1,567,530 grant workforce training grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. It is part of $474.5 million in grants to community colleges and universities around the country for the development and expansion of innovative training programs.

A Sun Valley woman faces a felony battery charge and a gross misdemeanor charge of child neglect following an incident Tuesday in which she allegedly spit on a firefighter and used her fingernails to scratch a Carson City deputy in the wrist causing injury.

Capri Johnson, 26, was jailed on the charges and has a bail of $32,500. According to the arrest report, officers were called at 4:41 p.m. to assist Carson City Fire Department personnel with a woman with two small children who was passed out intoxicated in the 1700 block of North Carson Street.

The non-profit foundation, Empowered Lives through the Cancer Journey, housed at the Sierra Nevada Cancer Center, is hosting this adults-only fundraising event – an evening of Halloween fun and gaiety. The event is scheduled for October 19, 2013 at 5 p.m., at the V&T Railroad, F Street Station in Virginia City.
