Weather systems will move into the region this week, bringing much-needed rain to the valleys around Carson City and snow to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

The first cold front will move eastward toward the west coast Tuesday and bring increasing winds to the Sierra and western Nevada. Wind gusts Tuesday and early Tuesday night will approach 45 mph in valley locations with locally stronger winds in wind prone areas. Ridge gusts will approach 100 mph.

Smoke may be visible west of Carson City around Spooner Summit beginning Monday when U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews continue prescribed fire operations in several locations around Lake Tahoe.

The prescribed fires could continue through the week and the weekend if weather, staffing, and conditions allow. Besides Spooner fuels management crews will likely be assigned to the Luther Pass Campground off of Highway 89 S near South Lake Tahoe.

A hit and run accident that resulted in an injury was called into dispatch at 11:48 p.m. Saturday in the 1500 block of Como Street in Carson City.

A 1990s model red Ford Explorer was seen fleeing the area, according to initial reports. The 20-year-old victim, a woman, was said to have an injury to her foot after the SUV ran over it.

She was reported to be conscious and alert and speaking with emergency crews on the scene.

After a silent day for the Western Nevada College bats on Friday, the Wildcats woke up offensively against 14th-ranked College of Southern Idaho on Saturday in Twins Falls, Idaho.

With eight different Wildcats delivering a hit in the opening game, the Carson City Western Nevada College team scored seven times in a 17-7 defeat. CSI completed the four-game Scenic West Athletic Conference sweep with a 14-3 victory in game two.

For her senior project, Carson High School student Becky Ortiz asked for a higher power to guide her. She and more than 150 fellow students, siblings, parents and grandparents found their way to the commons area in front of Nevada's highest court Saturday to reach for that power.
