A long-standing belief shared by many capital residents is that Carson City’s oldest tree dates back more than 200 years. During the nation’s birthday celebration in 1976, the massive cottonwood on the northwest corner of Division and Washington streets was designated the “Nevada Bicentennial Tree.” It still is marked as such with a large wooden plaque.

Carson City fire crews responded Saturday night to a structure fire in the 4800 block of Center Drive. The fire was reported at 7:38 p.m. and was said to be confined to an unoccupied garage area. Fire crews on the scene said the fire was 20 foot by 20 foot in size and knocked down at around 7:55 p.m. Additional fire trucks were reported to be unneeded and the fire was isolated to a power circuit.

Here is the Carson City road report for the week of Jan. 7-13: There will be work on Snyder Avenue between Bigelow Drive and Center Drive due to utility relocation related to the next phase of the Carson City Freeway. Most of the work will be on the shoulder, but traffic control will be in place for a short time.

A traffic accident this morning on Highway 395 at Airport Road north of Minden in Douglas County resulted in serious injuries to a motorist who was flown to Renown Medical Center in Reno, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

The body of Alysssa Byrne, missing since attending the SnowGlobe Music Festival and last seen by friends late New Year's Eve night or in Stateline early Jan. 1, was found this morning, Douglas County Sheriff's Office reports.

Byrne, 19, was found at 8:30 a.m. just outside the city limits of South Lake Tahoe. A utility worker discovered the remains just off Pioneer Trail, between Black Bart and Al Tahoe. The location is approximately one mile west of the Snow Globe Music Festival, authorities said.
