The OverDrive Digital Bookmobile National Tour will showcase the free eBook/audiobook download service offered by the Carson City Library, 900 North Roop Street on Thursday, March 28, from noon to 6 p.m.

Readers of all ages will learn how to download eBooks and audiobooks from the library through interactive demonstrations and high-definition instructional videos. A “gadget gallery” featuring Kindle, iPod touch, Android tablet, NOOK, Sony Reader, Blackberry, Windows Phone, and more will help visitors discover portable devices that are compatible with the library’s download service.

Gusty winds are expected tonight into Wednesday as a cold front moves into the region. Light rain is expected by Wednesday for Carson City, with snow in the higher elevations above Lake Tahoe, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Time is running out for you to submit your photo or photos for the “Carson Memories” contest. The deadline is Friday, March 22, 2013. Photos selected will become part of an historic mural exhibit on display at the Carson Nugget. The mural is being painted by renown Gardnerville artist, Beverly Caputo.

The three top submissions selected will win prizes; 1st is $500; 2nd is an iPad; 3rd is a Kindle Fire.

As they are preventing Department Managers from being present at budget hearings. Establishing a system of transparency is our responsibility, while accomplishing this we cannot exclude the right of the public to participate and collaborate in the budget process. Any level of openness that is interfered with only ensures that the public trust will be damaged.

HAWTHORNE — Seven Marines from a North Carolina unit were killed when a 60mm mortar exploded unexpectedly at a Nevada military depot that's an important training facility for troops headed overseas, a Marine Corps official said.

The Marines immediately issued an indefinite moratorium on firing of all such mortars worldwide until an investigation clears as safe the type of weapon and ammunition in the tragedy.

A Carson City man was arrested and faces a felony firearms charge related to an incident Saturday night in which a vehicle was shot at, with one bullet lodging into a funeral home.

Gregory John Lara, 21, was arrested in the 200 block of Carson Meadows Drive on Sunday, 8:30 p.m.

Retired Nevada Supreme Court Justice Bob Rose, who now serves as a senior judge, was injured this morning in a car accident and is hospitalized in Fallon. He is listed in “good condition” according to Sara Quale, spokeswoman for Banner Churchill Community Hospital in Fallon.

Rose, who lives in Carson City, was on his way to oversee Drug Court in the Fallon, Yerington and Hawthorne court, when he crashed near Highway 50 at about 7:30 a.m.

The Carson City Chamber Blood Drive Challenge took off early Monday morning with the city's top officials donating blood. Arriving early, Sheriff Kenny Furlong was the first in line to give blood, followed by District Attorney Neil Rombardo.

Mayor Robert Crowell gave it a good try, but his iron was off a fraction of a point thus was denied the opportunity. He stuck around, however, to give Furlong and Rombardo moral support. The first Chamber board member to give blood this morning was Curt Spradley of Carson Coffee.
