State Geologist James E. Faulds presents a thought-provoking question as the topic of the Nevada State Museum’s Frances Humphrey Lecture Series at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28. In “Why is Nevada in Hot Water: Tectonic Controls on Geothermal Activity in the Great Basin,” Faulds focuses on how fault systems initiate and evolve through time.

Geothermal studies enhance understanding of what controls hot fluids in the earth’s crust and aid in exploration and discovery of energy resources. Scientists study geologic faults and stress conditions to determine where to drill.

This is my annual reminder that if you are a trout fisherman and are new to our area, you may not be aware that some of our best Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing is at Pyramid Lake in the month of March.

And, with our current fabulous weather, you would be remiss if you did not take advantage of our record setting high temperatures, it may not last!

Pyramid Lake (which is roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) is about 30 miles north of Reno-Sparks, and it contains Lahontan Cutthroat Trout that can run into “Double Digits” in weight. That's big!

Congressman Mark Amodei has announced the death of his 80-year-old mother, Joy Longero Amodei. A brief statement from his spokesman this morning said she died Tuesday and that the congressman returned home to Carson City.

Congressman Amodei's spokesman Brian L. Baluta said funeral arrangements are forthcoming.
