Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights reunites with the Empty Bowls Project
Submitted by Danielle Cook on Mon, 11/17/2014 - 3:22amThe Annual Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights and Official Tree Lighting tonight, Friday, Dec. 5. is more than just flipping on the holiday lights in downtown Carson City; Santa, carolers, soup, hot chocolate, and ice skating all play a part in the fun.

Annual Carson High Holiday Craft Fair Nov. 21 and 22
Submitted by Danielle Cook on Mon, 11/17/2014 - 1:59amCarson High School will be hosting its annual Craft Fair this weekend, Friday, Nov. 21 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free for children and K-12 students. For adults admission Friday is $2 and allows re-entry on Saturday; Saturday's admission is $1.50, with a discount if you bring something non-perishable for their food drive.
Ordering begins for Carson City's best made Thanksgiving pies in 'Pie to the Rescue' fundraiser

Support families in need this holiday season as dozens of Northern Nevada’s best chefs, from local restaurants, donate their time and talent to bake fabulous Thanksgiving pies for the 4th Annual Pie to the Rescue.
Choose from three delicious pies, pumpkin, pecan or apple, place your order and then pick up your pies, Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014, just in time for Thanksgiving. This year proceeds benefit the Northern Nevada Dream Center, Carson Valley Community Food Closet, the Family Vision Food Truck and the Ron Wood Community Essentials Food Bank.

To donate, drop off frozen turkeys to Mike's Pharmacy any time between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. to help food banks in Carson, Douglas, and Lyon Counties.

Leisure Hour Club Recognizes WNC Scholarship Recipients

For the past several years, the Club funded merit scholarships for five graduates of Carson City and Dayton high schools. In the coming year, graduates from Douglas High School will also be eligible.

Pictured here is the winner, Kyra Fields, a fifth grader at Fritsch Elementary School. Her winning entry is “The Beast of Knowledge…Keeper of the Words.”
Kyra is holding her prize, a stack of books, a certificate for one free book of her choice each month for a year at the book store and a coupon donated by Round Table Pizza. Other second and third place winners will also receive books and more for their imaginative entries.
Senator Square: CHS Marching Band wins Nevada Day Battle of the Bands
Submitted by editor on Sun, 11/09/2014 - 8:50amThe CHS Marching Band competed last weekend in the Nevada Day Battle of the Bands held at Spanish Springs High School. The band finished first in their division beating out rivals Douglas High School.
They received the caption for "Outstanding Music." This award marks the first time in nine years that the marching band took home a first place trophy in a field show competition. Way to Go Big Blue Thunder!

In a remarkable interfaith gesture, Nevada’s faith leaders from various traditions will join together to pray for God’s mercy and for the worldwide Ebola victims and their loved ones and care providers in Nevada Governor’s Mansion on Nov. 13. The public is welcome to this free event which will start at 5:45 p.m. at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion, 606 Mountain St., Carson City.
Pickup Filled with Pet Food at Michael Hohl’s

Café at Adele's hosts fifth Celebrity Chef and Harvest Dinner Monday to benefit the Greenhouse Project

The event, hosted the first time as a fundrasier for The Greenhouse Project and a tribute dinner to Paul Abowd, restaurateur and Charlie’s father, has grown into a benefit for The Greenhouse Project on site at Carson High School.
The reception begins with hors d’oeuvres at 5 p.m., followed by dinner.

They will be in the training arena both days with a couple of adorable kitten teams all trying to win your heart. Plan on stopping by, do a little cheering and maybe you'll fall in love with one of the outstanding players. Game time is 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15 and 1 p.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16.

While the skies above Carson City had seen rain earlier Saturday morning, they held out for the duration of the parade, with just a few sprinkles to go along with the thousands of happy, smiling faces. Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 11/01/2014 - 7:43amHundreds of hungry Nevada Day parade revelers lined up early Saturday morning at Red's Old 395 Grill in Carson City for the 15th annual Nevada Day Pancake Breakfast hosted by Builders Alliance of Western Nevada, also known as BAWN.
The event runs through 10 a.m. and features a full line pancake breakfast, sausage and bacon. The annual breakfast benefits the BAWN Women’s Council and their philanthropic endeavors.

Happy Birthday Nevada: 'You know you're a Nevadan if ...'

And every so often, you catch lightning in a bottle.
That is what happened to me in October 2001 when I wrote a column for Nevada Day with the headline, “Signs you might be a Nevadan.”
