Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights reunites with the Empty Bowls Project

The Annual Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights and Official Tree Lighting tonight, Friday, Dec. 5. is more than just flipping on the holiday lights in downtown Carson City; Santa, carolers, soup, hot chocolate, and ice skating all play a part in the fun.

The Itinerary for the festival is as follows:

Annual Carson High Holiday Craft Fair Nov. 21 and 22

Carson High School will be hosting its annual Craft Fair this weekend, Friday, Nov. 21 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free for children and K-12 students. For adults admission Friday is $2 and allows re-entry on Saturday; Saturday's admission is $1.50, with a discount if you bring something non-perishable for their food drive.

Ordering begins for Carson City's best made Thanksgiving pies in 'Pie to the Rescue' fundraiser

What's a Thanksgiving without pie? Support families in need this holiday season as dozens of Northern Nevada’s best chefs, from local restaurants, donate their time and talent to bake fabulous Thanksgiving pies for the 4th Annual Pie to the Rescue.

Choose from three delicious pies, pumpkin, pecan or apple, place your order and then pick up your pies, Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014, just in time for Thanksgiving. This year proceeds benefit the Northern Nevada Dream Center, Carson Valley Community Food Closet, the Family Vision Food Truck and the Ron Wood Community Essentials Food Bank.

Mike's Pharmacy's Annual Turkey Round-up Nov. 19

For the 16th year, Mike's Pharmacy at 1007 N. Carson St. Ste 100 will be holding its "Annual Turkey Round-up" for the Salvation Army. To donate, drop off frozen turkeys to Mike's Pharmacy any time between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. to help food banks in Carson, Douglas, and Lyon Counties.

Breakfast with Santa returns to The Grove for to help families stay near their children in the hospital

The third annual Breakfast with Santa benefits Ronald McDonald House Charities® Northern Nevada (RMHC® Northern Nevada), a non-profit that houses families whose children are receiving medical treatment in local hospitals.

Leisure Hour Club Recognizes WNC Scholarship Recipients

For the past several years, the Club funded merit scholarships for five graduates of Carson City and Dayton high schools. In the coming year, graduates from Douglas High School will also be eligible.

Friends of Library Name the Beast Contest Winner is Kyra Fields

The Friends of the Library announce the Grand Prize winner of the “Name the Beast” contest at the Browsers Corner Book Store.

Pictured here is the winner, Kyra Fields, a fifth grader at Fritsch Elementary School. Her winning entry is “The Beast of Knowledge…Keeper of the Words.”

Kyra is holding her prize, a stack of books, a certificate for one free book of her choice each month for a year at the book store and a coupon donated by Round Table Pizza. Other second and third place winners will also receive books and more for their imaginative entries.

Senator Square: CHS Marching Band wins Nevada Day Battle of the Bands

The CHS Marching Band competed last weekend in the Nevada Day Battle of the Bands held at Spanish Springs High School. The band finished first in their division beating out rivals Douglas High School.

They received the caption for "Outstanding Music." This award marks the first time in nine years that the marching band took home a first place trophy in a field show competition. Way to Go Big Blue Thunder!

Multi-faith Prayer Service at Governor’s Mansion in view of Ebola epidemic

Ebola virus disease, a severe and often fatal illness in humans, is an international health emergency, a devastating and horrifying disease. Thousands have died in the ongoing Ebola epidemic.

In a remarkable interfaith gesture, Nevada’s faith leaders from various traditions will join together to pray for God’s mercy and for the worldwide Ebola victims and their loved ones and care providers in Nevada Governor’s Mansion on Nov. 13. The public is welcome to this free event which will start at 5:45 p.m. at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion, 606 Mountain St., Carson City.

Pickup Filled with Pet Food at Michael Hohl’s

During October, Michael Hohl Motor Company held a pet food drive to fill a pickup for the national nonprofit Pets of the Homeless. A total of 1,580 pounds of pet food and supplies filled the pickup and where delivered to FISH of Carson City on Monday.

Café at Adele's hosts fifth Celebrity Chef and Harvest Dinner Monday to benefit the Greenhouse Project

Lucky attendants at the fifth annual Celebrity Chef & Harvest Dinner, Nov. 10, will enjoy six courses created by chefs Charlie Abowd and Mark Estee.

The event, hosted the first time as a fundrasier for The Greenhouse Project and a tribute dinner to Paul Abowd, restaurateur and Charlie’s father, has grown into a benefit for The Greenhouse Project on site at Carson High School.

The reception begins with hors d’oeuvres at 5 p.m., followed by dinner.

Carson City and Storey County 4-H Readying for Annual Fabric Sale

The annual Carson City / Storey County 4-H Fabulous Fabric and Rummage Sale will be held Saturday and Sunday Feb. 14-15, 2015 at Fuji Park Exhibit Hall in Carson City. The sale is a project of the Carson City/Storey County Leaders Council. All sale proceeds benefit the council’s scholarship fund.

Holiday Craft Fair season kicks-off Saturday

While the Nevada Day Parade is known for its length along Carson Street and the number of entries from around the state who participate, it wasn't short of stellar floats, high school and military marching bands, and its share of elected leaders and those running for office.

This year's Nevada Day Parade was indeed a special one as the Silver State celebrates its 150th Sesquicentennial. While the skies above Carson City had seen rain earlier Saturday morning, they held out for the duration of the parade, with just a few sprinkles to go along with the thousands of happy, smiling faces. Hundreds of hungry Nevada Day parade revelers lined up early Saturday morning at Red's Old 395 Grill in Carson City for the 15th annual Nevada Day Pancake Breakfast hosted by Builders Alliance of Western Nevada, also known as BAWN.

The event runs through 10 a.m. and features a full line pancake breakfast, sausage and bacon. The annual breakfast benefits the BAWN Women’s Council and their philanthropic endeavors.

The Friends of the Carson City Library are having a Holiday Food Drive for the Ron Wood Resource Center. Every day right here in Carson City there are families who do not have enough to eat. Help us make a difference. Bring in a donation of canned or packaged food and pick out a free book of your choice. Bring your donation any time between 9:30 am and 5:00 pm from Nov. 3 through Nov. 15 to the book store at 711 E. Washington St.

Happy Birthday Nevada: 'You know you're a Nevadan if ...'

As most column writers will tell you, reader reaction to columns you’re particularly proud of can range from crickets to complaints to an occasional “good column” e-mail, phone call or comment.

And every so often, you catch lightning in a bottle.

That is what happened to me in October 2001 when I wrote a column for Nevada Day with the headline, “Signs you might be a Nevadan.”
