Carson City area weather: Showers and thundershowers possible later Monday

National Weather Service forecasters say rain and thunderstorms are likely to develop Monday south of US-50 and quickly move northward with the greatest chances for rain over Mono, Mineral, Lyon, Churchill and Pershing counties before moving into the Reno, Carson City and Lake Tahoe regions.

Smoky skies Monday around Carson Valley, Carson City continues to degrade air quality

Air quality around Carson City and Dayton was in the "unhealthy" category Monday morning due to smoky skies from the Tamarack Fire in Alpine County. For the Carson Valley area in Douglas County, the air quality was in the "very unhealthy" range according to airnow.gov. The air quality monitors change hourly.

Wildlife fisheries biologist to speak to Carson City Rotarians

Carson City area Rotarians will welcome Nevada Department of Wildlife Fisheries Biologist Travis Hawks at the club’s meeting on Tuesday, July 20. The meeting takes place in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom at 12:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Carson City's Foreman-Roberts House, Carriage House open to the public Sunday, July 25

The beautiful gothic style Foreman-Roberts House, 1207 North Carson Street (yellow house), Carson City, will be open to the public Sunday, July 25, 2021, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Docents will tell the story of the Roberts family and their connection to the seeress Eilley Bowers, how the house came to Carson City in 1874, facts about the family and the famous spiritualist of the home.

Obituary: Yhvona Martin

At age 92, Florence Yhvona Martin passed peacefully on June 11, 2021 at Skyline Estates Assisted Living Center. While medical personnel called it, “Failure to Thrive”, that phrase in no way described the dynamic, energy-filled life Yhvona led.

Tamarack Fire in Alpine County remapped, evacuation orders remain in place

UPDATE: The U.S. Forest Service revised the size of the Tamarack Fire on Monday morning to 23,078 acres. In its Sunday night briefing the agency said an infrared-equipped plane was scheduled to fly the fire overnight, to provide more accurate information about the fire’s size and location. As of Sunday evening there were 796 firefighting personnel on the fire with 0 percent containment.

Alpine County on Sunday evening reports the Tamarack Fire has burned 25,000 acres, with six structures lost and air response remaining limited due to smoke. The county website made the announcement update at 5:20 p.m.

Mandatory evacuations are in place for the following areas: Grover Hot Springs, Shay Creek, MarkleeVillage, Markleeville, Carson River Resort, & Poor Boy Road area, Wolf Creek Campground, Silver Creek Campground, additionally Sierra Pines, Upper and Lower Manzanita, Crystal Springs, Alpine Village, Diamond Valley Road and Hung-a-lel-ti are now under mandatory evacuations. "The Mesa" is under a voluntary evacuation but conditions are changing fast. The county advises the public to stay out of these areas to allow emergency personnel to do their jobs. The fire evacuation center is at the Douglas County Senior Center in Gardnerville.

The Tamarack Fire burning in Alpine County near Markleeville is estimated at 18,299 acres and was 0 percent contained as of around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The Forest Service revised the acres earlier Sunday and are subject to change as the mapping progresses. There are 517 firefighting personnel working on the fire.
