Carson City honors Marv Teixeira, others for devotion to parks and recreation

Recognition for various people devoted to Carson City parks and recreation, including youth sports, featured a special award for the late Marv Teixeira and his sons Tuesday.

Carson City Chamber: Pete Livermore was fearless leader, tireless advocate for youth

A good friend of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce passed away Monday of a heart attack. Pete Livermore was a community icon and did much for the community we know today. He was the “father of youth sports” and worked diligently to make certain the children of Carson City played on the best fields money could buy.

Longtime Carson City businessman, elected leader Pete Livermore dies

Pete Livermore, a longtime Carson City elected leader and business owner, died Monday at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. He was 73.

Livermore was a Nevada Assemblyman who decided this year that he would not seek re-election. He began in the Assembly District 40 on Feb. 7 2011. Before that, Livermore was a member of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, 1998-2010; was Mayor pro Tem, Carson City, 2004-2006.

Carson City Parks and Recreation Awards Ceremony October 21

The Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation will present Special Recognition Awards for year 2014 recipients in a brief ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 4:30 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion (formerly Pony Express Pavilion) in Mills Park. The public is invited to attend this free, outdoor event.

The awards will be presented in the following categories:

Former Carson City Mayor Marv Teixeira dies at 79

UPDATE: A celebration of life for former Carson City Mayor Marv Teixeira will be Friday, June 20, 11:30 a.m. at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 3000 North Lompa Lane in Carson City. Teixeira died June 5, 2014. He was 79.
A reception will follow at Eagle Valley Golf Course, 3999 Centennial Park Drive in Carson City.

Silver State Volleyball Teams Head to AAU Girls National Volleyball Championships in Florida

Silver State Volleyball Club formerly Capital City Volleyball Club and Silver State Volleyball Academy has been serving Northern Nevada and California communities since 1999, assisting girls ages 8-18 to reach their dreams of becoming accomplished volleyball players.

Carson City District Court Judge Jim Wilson files for re-election

Judge Jim Wilson filed for reelection as district court judge. His campaign committee includes: Roger Williams, Mary Pierczynski, Frank Flaherty, Bill Brewer, Ryan Russell, and Daniel Gonzales.

Judge Wilson was elected to the First Judicial District Court, which serves Carson City and Storey County, in 2008.

Judge Jim Wilson will seek re-election as district court judge. Judge Wilson was elected to the First Judicial District Court, which serves Carson City and Storey County, in 2008.

Judge Wilson graduated from Carson High School, the University of Nevada, Reno, and McGeorge School of Law. He was a deputy district attorney and then Elko County District Attorney. He was in private practice in Carson City for 22 years before taking the bench.

Carson City Pop Warner cheer squad hosts Saturday rummage sale

The Carson City Pop Warner Cheerleading squad will host a rummage sale this Saturday, Aug. 10. All proceeds go to National Competition in Florida.

The event will be at the Carson City Plaza Hotel, 801 South Carson Street. It runs from 8:00am to 3:00pm

Signups begin for Carson City CrossFit Future Athlete Sport Conditioning Camp

The Carson City CrossFit Future Athlete Sport Conditioning Summer Camp will run June 10 through July 12.

This will be for all youth athletes playing football, soccer, basketball, baseball, track, cross country, tennis, or want to get in to the Sport of Fitness, CrossFit.

The program will encompass strength training, sport conditioning, kettlebells, tire flips, plyometrics, and sprints. This program is designed for the young athlete to not only get stronger but get better conditioning in during the summer months.

Grand Slam Run

Come out and support the Carson Capitals Baseball Program in their inaugural Grand Slam Run on April 28th at 10 am at El Charro Avitia. This is a 5K and 10K event for the entire family. Registration is $25 Adults prior to April 18 and $30 after and only $15 for kids ages 5-14. There will be race day registration from 8:30-9:30 am for $35. Registration for the race gets you a water bottle and buffet lunch. You can also purchase Lunch tickets for $10 if you aren't able to run.

What are some high schools thinking? Some high schools around the nation are lowering or have already lowered the Grade Point Average (GPA) requirements for their student-athletes, and some go as low as 1.6 (a “D” average). This is absolutely absurd to me. I watched a show on ESPN about this and it left me fuming. I cannot believe that schools are so lazy to teach their pupils. They are indirectly saying: “Students struggle so we are not going to work to get them better.”

Assemblyman John Hambrick this week said he will vie for chairmanship of the Republican Assembly Caucus against sitting chairman Pete Goicoechea if he wins reelection in November. He also expressed concerns about what he characterized as an abuse of power by some in Democratic leadership in Carson City.
