Column: Remembering John McCain

I had already written out this morning's column ahead of time when I learned of U.S. Sen. John McCain's passing.

His death has changed the course of my day, because now I am writing to remember the man who earned the media moniker of "Maverick," and the reputation of someone who usually went his own way.

Security Clearances: When Should they be Revoked?

Recently, President Donald Trump revoked the security clearance of former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Brennan, who now works as a pundit for MSNBC.

People can argue the politics of this decision until they’re blue (or red) in the face. The larger issue is: Why would anyone still retain a security clearance after leaving a government position in which they were granted that status?

New Japanese Class Being Offered by WNC during Fall Semester

Western Nevada College is offering a new opportunity to study a foreign language for the upcoming fall semester.
Japanese 111, a four-credit language course, will be available to students on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 to 6:45 p.m. on the Carson City campus.

Carson City Sheriff's arrest log: Third battery offense leads to felony bust

A 32 year-old Carson City man was arrested late Wednesday night at 10:33 p.m. in the 2700 block of Menlo Drive on two counts of felony third-offense domestic battery, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported, as well as for two outstanding bench warrants issued by the Carson City Justice Court.

The Carson City Fair at Fuji Park offers a plethora of entertainment for all ages including tractor pulls, a carnival, and farm animals. Carson City health officials address unhealthy air quality due to smoke from fire near Yosemite

Carson City Health and Human Services has been receiving several calls about the impact of the smoke from the Ferguson Fire near Yosemite National Park. The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection and Carson City Health and Human Services continue to monitor air quality concerns from smoke drifting into the area from this fire.

John Bullis column: Cancellation of debt is taxable if not insolvent

Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton got student loans to finance the education of their adult son (Andrew). In 2008 Mr. Hamilton was permanently disabled due to a back injury. In June of 2011 he asked to have the loans discharged (cancelled). In 2011 two lenders did cancel loans totaling $158,511.

Two Eagle Valley Middle School students and two Pioneer High School students and their families experienced a tragic fire May 16 in Carson City.

Antonio and Alexis Trujillo’s family, and Jordan and Theodore Leyva’s family are now displaced following this incident.
