The last days of 2014 in Carson City will be windy, cold with possible snow

UPDATE: While not packing a lot of moisture, a cold storm system is headed our way beginning late Monday, bringing gusty winds, cold temperatures, and the potential for light snow, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow could begin as early as 8 p.m. Monday night with the main window for snowfall being 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. 1 to 2 inches of snow is expected through the Reno and Carson City areas with 2 to 4 inches south into Minden and Gardnerville. 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected west of Highway 95 near Walker Lake.

Spring Creek seeding project aims to jumpstart crucial habitat

On a cold and windy morning in November, 45 men and women took to the hills in the Bodie Hills to plant as many sagebrush seedlings as they could in a two-day span. Besides the cold, the work itself was physically demanding as each seedling had to be planted by hand. What makes this story even more interesting is the fact that many of the people on those hills volunteered to be there.

Cooperative Extension: The Mistake in Staking Trees

The things people do to trees sometimes horrify me. Topped trees or those with hacked instead of pruned limbs; trees planted under power lines; and trees left without water in long ago removed lawns are a few of my pet peeves. Improper staking is another.

Snow Biking at Red Lake

After a long wait with much anticipation, I finally got a chance to take the new fat bike out for its first snow ride. Acting on a tip that there was good snow cover with several miles of snow machine tracks up near Carson Pass, I loaded the bike up in the car and headed up to Red Lake on Highway 88.

Gusty winds stir and shake but spare Carson City of major damage

Even though the wind has calmed some, clusters around Carson City remained without power early Thursday evening, according to NV Energy. Go here for the latest map and updates.

Carson City was largely spared, so far, by damaging winds that happened at Lake Tahoe, Carson Valley and Reno-Sparks earlier Thursday. Dispatch reports some downed power lines and tree limbs through late morning and the middle of the afternoon.

Stunning Sky over Carson City

The Bright Carson Sky with a Brilliant Rainbow

The western sky above Carson City was stunning yesterday, with a quick changing mixture of cool breezes, way cooler breezes, drizzling rain, more wind, huge clouds, then bright sunshine, and even a brilliant rainbow or two.

This panoramic photo view looking north was taken around noon at the Mountain Street Trailhead Park, which is just north of Fleischmann Way at 1340 Mountain Street.

Outdoors with Don Q: Just a few days left to fish many California waters

This is my annual reminder that many California waters will close to fishing on Saturday, November 15.
So if you want to fish any of them, you better hustle because you are rapidly running out of time.
Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April next year (April 25, 2015), and that is a long, long time to wait to wet your line.
Here is a partial list of some of the nearby waters that will be closing:
