UNR archeologist leads Virginia City hospital excavation team

St. Mary Louise Hospital in Virginia City opened in 1876 and served the mining community until the early 20th century.
Douglas Boyle named to Nevada State Climatologist position

The state climatologist and the Nevada Climate Office collect, maintain and interpret Nevada’s climate and weather data information, publish a quarterly report and provide leadership on climatic hazards and drought planning in the state through work and consultation with the governor's office and state agencies.
Greater Nevada Credit Union Awards $15,000 in Scholarships

Art project 'Visualizing Change' at Lake Tahoe's Sierra Nevada College through July 27

The exhibit is located in the Prim Desert Research Library at Sierra Nevada College at Lake Tahoe’s Incline Village. It features photography and oil painting contributions from eight noted artists and is free and open to the public through July 27.

UNR develops technology used for NASA quake monitoring test

In celebration of Earth Day, Knowledge Center employees have erected a 7-feet-tall, 8-feet-wide “N,” constructed with 1,580 recycled water bottles collected in the center’s recycling receptacles.

Demographer: Nevada population remains even, Carson City sees slight increase

The state gained an estimated 17,152 people from July 2010 to July 2011, an estimated increase of 0.6 percent, about equivalent to the increase of 0.7 percent the prior year. Two years ago, the state lost 27,677 people, a decrease of about 1.0 percent.

Born Janet Sylvia MacDonald May 6, 1941 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Jan moved to Nevada in 1959. As a single mother with a young son, she attended the University of Nevada, Reno during the day and worked evenings to support her family. It was during this time that Jan danced and performed with famous Bertha the Elephant in the main showroom at John Asquaga’s Nugget.
Reno Assemblyman Named GOP Caucus Leader In Unanimous Vote

The former minority Leader, Pete Goicoechea, R-Eureka, stepped down because of his intention to run for the Nevada State Senate in District 19.
Assembly Republicans currently hold 16 seats in the 42-member Assembly, while Democrats control 26 seats.
Hickey, who represents District 25 in Reno, returned to the Assembly in 2010 after an absence of several years.
