This Nevada Day, the GreenUP initiative made its debut in order to help Carson City get a little more green — especially along the parade route.

Going into the eve of Halloween, teeth will be chattering as the weather calls for sunny skies but with a chill in the air and daytime temperatures in the upper 40s around the capital city. Events around town Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019 include a Halloween costume walk at Riverview Park in Carson City, a "trick or trunk" event in Dayton, art showings, storytelling at the Carson City Library and more.

Over the Nevada Day Weekend, I was sent a copy of an email from a friend and trusted colleague. The subject matter of this email was a scurrilous attack on Supervisor Lori Bagwell, who may/may not run for Mayor of Carson City, and either way, her final decision to run for Mayor is entirely up to her and inevitably she will present her well qualified credentials to the voters of Carson City.

Heading into Tuesday, expect continued sunny skies and cool temperatures. Events for the day include a morning walk and evening hike with Muscle Powered, Fall job fairs hosted by Nevada JobConnect and the Carson Nugget, the 3rd annual "BOO-nanza" celebration at the Carson City Community Center and library, a Relay for Life fundraiser at Firehouse Subs and more.

With the wildly festive Nevada Day weekend now behind us, a busy week is ahead as we begin to close out October and prepare to celebrate Halloween in the capital city. Activities Monday include a lunch discussion with the director of the Toiyabe Chapter of the Sierra Club, art showings, West Coast swing dancing and more.

Carson Demolition, Muscle Powered and the Desert Pigs crew from Lyon County made up an organized group of 28 volunteers who spent Sunday cleaning up Carson City after the Nevada Day festivities Saturday.

According to Muscle Powered's Donna Inversin, 15 bags of recyclables were collected before 11 a.m. with more being scooped up.

Carson High School cheerleaders cheered as they entered Walmart in Carson City and then performed two more cheers on top of that. There is an old saying found in a very old book which says, “You have not because you ask not.”

Events around the capital city area include a post Nevada Day Trash Mob cleanup, a morning bike ride, Pow Wow activities at the MAC, the RSVP carnival at Mills Park as well as as tours of the Wungnema House, also in the park, Thomas the Train activities Virginia City and more. Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region Friday through Sunday to celebrate Nevada Day. Activities include the annual parade down Carson Street, a carnival at Mills Park, the 30th annual Nevada Day Classic, The La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the MAC, beard and rock drilling contests, delicious food dishes, pancakes, chili and plenty of beverages to suit kids and adults of all ages.

Counting down the hours until the Nevada Day weekend celebration begins, we're heading into Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019 with sunny skies in the forecast through Sunday. Thursday opens the first of the four-day annual RSVP Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park with $1 ride family night hosted by Carson City Toyota. Other activities around the capital city include a Muscle Powered afternoon hike, art showings, library activities, a gold and silver rush presentation at the Nevada State Museum and more.

The Silver State celebrates its birthday this week in Carson City and will put on a statehood celebration like no other as Nevada Day comes into full swing, featuring the annual parade down Carson Street on Saturday, a carnival at Mills Park, The La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the MAC, activities for adults and kids, contests, delicious food dishes, pancakes, chili and plenty of beverages to suit every wild hair.

We're days away from our celebration of statehood and the weather around the capital city couldn't be more, well, Nevada-like with daytime highs near 70 and sunny skies. Carson City area activities ahead for Wednesday, Oct. 23 feature an economic roundup presented by the Northern Nevada Development Authority at Casino Fandango, Carson Tahoe's annual "Spooktacular" family event, Firehouse Subs will host our local Search and Rescue for a dinner fundraiser; Sierra Nevada Journeys and Nature Conservancy will present family STEM night in Genoa, plus art showings and more. LAKE TAHOE — As the temperature drops outside and we think about using our fireplaces and heating stoves, it’s important to remember a few safety tips and precautions. Heating equipment and improper ash disposal are leading causes of home and wildland fires during the fall and winter months.

Going into Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019 more sunny skies and warm fall temperatures will continue to shine on the capital city as we prepare for the Nevada Day weekend. Ahead Tuesday include a morning walk and evening hike with Muscle Powered, a "haunted" cemetery tour at Lone Mountain, a business networking meeting at Casino Fandango and the Fat Tuesday business networking group at Carson Nugget, archery at Centennial Park and more. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has begun closing recreational facilities around the Tahoe Basin for the winter season. Seasonal closures apply to many Forest Service recreation sites including beaches, campgrounds, picnic areas and National Forest roads.

Partnership Carson City's annual prescription drug roundup Saturday netted 273 pounds of pills and 114 pounds of needles.

And we're off as we count down the days until Saturday's Nevada Day celebration, the biggest statewide party of its kind or any kind for that matter. Going into the first day of the work week, Monday, Oct. 21, we're looking at sunshine and a high around 70. The results of the Carson High Schol HOSA Future Health Professionals career display winners are in, and the 1st Place winners are Faith Luis and Ava Ponczoch, 2nd Place are Millie Arroyo and Julia Kaiser, and 3rd Place winners are Brooklyn Robertson and Nick Batien.

In the wake of today's high winds, several homes on the west side of Carson City are again being inundated by tumbleweeds, most of which nearby residents claim are coming from the nearby Andersen Ranch, and the city isn't doing enough to stop it.

There are a number of prescription drug roundups happening this Saturday, Oct. 19 around the region, including drop-off stations in Carson City, Douglas County and Dayton.

These annual events help protect the community with proper disposal of unused or expired prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, prescription liquids, pet medications, syringes and more. The effort is part of the federal drug round-up initiative.

Going into the final stretch of the work week Thursday, Oct. 17, 2019 will bring cool conditions, a slight chance of rain and some sunshine. Activities around the capital city include a meeting of the Board of Supervisors, a Muscle Powered hike at Silver Saddle Ranch, a rally at the legislative building, modern western square dancing lessons, art showings, library activities and more. It's that spooky time again, when the leaves begin to fall, Nevada Day is gearing up to bring us the best parade in the state, and our little ghouls and goblins are putting together their terrifying and adorable costumes in preparation for sugary chaos.

While haze from nearby Sierra fires may linger some, we're looking at another pleasant fall day around the capital city heading into Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019. Events locally include a ribbon cutting and outdoor moving showing at the new Schulz Ranch Park, workshops, a women's safety meeting, a pumpkin patch for kids at Carson Mall, plus art showings and public talks. After hours it will be toasts, cheers and business networking all around at the Dayton Taphouse. Enjoy the day.

Heading into Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019, it will be a busy day ahead around the capital city including a Carson City Chamber of Commerce luncheon with Nevada's chief economist, a GOP Women's Club luncheon with Nevada State Senator James Settelmeyer, Sierra Lutheran will host its 7th and 8th Grade Visitation Day, plus a morning walk, evening hike with Muscle Powered, archery at Centennial Park, art night at the library and more. Going into Monday, Oct. 14, 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies and a high near 70. The first day of the work week is deadline day to get nominations in for the Carson City Carson City 2019 Mayor's Arts Awards. Events around the capital city include a luncheon with Lt. Governor Kate Marshall, the second of a six-week standup comedy class, art showings, West Coast swing dancing and more.

CHS has many opportunities for students to become a part of something bigger than just themselves, not that making a name for oneself is a bad idea or anything, but it is up to the student to step on up, come on in, and check them out. There are so many clubs on campus; there are Interact Club meetings at lunch in CHS teacher Erin Been’s room every Thursday, and Been also advises the Represent Club.

Sections of the Linear Ditch Trail in Carson City will be closed starting Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019, for maintenance and cleaning. The multiuse path will be closed from the east end of the Linear Ditch, east of Fremont Elementary School and continue west to South Roop Street along Governor’s Field. Maintenance is anticipated to take up to several weeks.

UPDATE: The 19-year-old bear captured Tuesday in Carson City by wildlife officials has died as a result of a brain tumor after he was tranquilized, with the intention of being released later into the wild, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife. With recent bear sightings around Carson City, including Tuesday morning off of Minnesota Street, it is a sure sign that fall has set in as the capital city area is seeing increased bear foraging activity, according to wildlife officials.

CARSON CITY — GreenUP!, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides environmental education to businesses announced that Nevada Day commemorative cups are now on sale for $10 at the Nevada Day store located at 716 N. Carson Street.

National Honor Society held its induction ceremony Sept. 23 in the CHS Big Gym featuring guest speaker Ryan Costella a 2000 CHS graduate. Costella was an active member of NHS, and this fact influenced his desire to attend college at Villanova University in Philadelphia, PA where he earned degrees in Political Science and English.
